I would assume it's because the majority of the masses don't really care about AM radio all that much. At least not enough to invest in an antenna for home listening. There's not really a huge demand for such a thing.
As for building your own loop antenna, I've built my own. The honest truth? It's made from speaker wire, cardboard and duct tape! And it works beautifully! It's fairly directional (at least enough to be able to null out most problem stations), and while I didn't make it tunable, I haven't found myself
wanting a tunable antenna since I built it. It seems to pick up everything pretty well.
Building one isn't really a lot of work. Do a Google search for "AM loop antenna" and click through the results. The first (non-sponsored) page that comes up (
www.mindspring.com/~loop_antenna/ just in case the results that appear somehow change between the time I post this and the time you read it) is what guided me through building my antenna. While the tuning capacitor the design on the page calls for isn't necessary, it
will to some extent help. But like I said before, I didn't include it and haven't found the need to. You may find otherwise.
Hope this helps!<P ID="signature">______________
