AM Radio Open Tonight

Someone had to start this one.

I just heard both the station and legal ids for AM 850 KOA Denver, Colorado, and WWL AM 870 New Orleans, Louisiana both news/talk/sports stations.

It is coming in strong, I am picking it up on a Panasonic Walkman in Northwest Austin, Texas.

Any other out of town AM's picked up tonight in the Austin area?

WWL 870 is almost normal for me to pick up like a local at night, have you tried 650 WSM, or 1130 AM KWKH?

Welcome to 1962.

KOA is a fairly regular catch on my Toyota car radio in Austin at night.

You may also be able to pick up KSL at 1160-AM out of Salt Lake City, which I can get on my car radio in Austin most nights.

You also might want to snag WSB on 750-AM from Atlanta. Pretty much a regular on the little Toyota radio.

Same here. KOA, too.

Before I put an Internet radio on my bedside table, I used to regularly listen to WWL on AM between 11PM and midnight.

It occured to me that you're probably getting new (to you) DX stations on AM because a bunch of nighttimers started turning off their IBOC at night around the first of the year. Without the splatter from the IBOC, you're probably hearing signals that were covered up by noise before.

That is because my home receiver is not hookup to an AM antenna, I use my walkman to pick up AM radio signals beyond KLBJ-AM. Plus I have several electronic devices such as VCR's DVD Recoders, Phonograph player, TV projector, Netgear Digital Navigator streaming device and PC in the same room. At home I mostly listen to 98.9, 103.5 comes in faintly with a VHF rabbit ears hooked up to it. One day I will get around to buy shorter A/V and Coax cables, but the back side to all of my equipment has a forest (no kidding) full of wires.

Back in the late 60's and early 70's I thought WLAC AM was the only station on the dial....R&B and Soul and of course Sunday night meant hearing "praise the Lord and send me a dollar" preaching. WOAI was pretty good for a stretch during that time as well.

Lucky you! I can't get KOA anymore after KEYH got night authorization (I am 20 km line of sight from the transmitter) but WWL is like a regional most nights.

For some reason I always have trouble getting KLBJ, night or day, in Houston.
