AM Radio-Overnights

I probably listen to more overnight AM radio than anyone. Here are my opinions of the all night offerings.

670 KMZQ-I rarely listen to this station for some reason. The last I heard Joey Reynolds was on overnights. He has since been taken off his flagship station WOR/New York and replaced by Coast to Coast AM. I'm not sure if he still has a syndicated show.

720 KDWN-Phil Hendrie is very talented. But once you know what his schtick is it's difficult to listen. At least it is for me because I prefer real. I can't get into Dennis Miller. He's too scattered for me. I once heard him talk about something political and then with no transition give a recepie for some dish. I don't care for the New Vitality infomercials with host Jonathon Greenhut. That's an instant tune-out. I do however enjoy Goldline. They do hawk gold too much (which is why they buy the time to begin with) but when they are not in sales mode the financial discussion is as good as you'll find on the radio.

840 KXNT-Coast to Coast is the king of overnight talk. It's a high quality show but I am only interested in the subject matter maybe 2 times a week. The guests who talk about UFOs or the hard sciences are boring to me. My favorite commercial runs on this show...Las Vegas Christian singer XM McDonald..It never fails to give the chills when I hear him belt out "God Bless America".

920 KBAD-JT the Brick is good. I also like their weekend overnighter Ben Maller (who used to be on fulltime). He has an entertaining feature during football season called "Ben Vs the coin"..usually the coin flip picks more winners than Ben with his solid reasoning, My only criticism is he talks and fools around with the drunk callers for too long, I am not amused by it.

970 KNUU-Their overnight mix of happy talk and specialty shows is not my cup of tea, On Sunday nights I sometimes listen to the Talk radio countdown. Michael Harrison from talkers magazine is a frequent guest...I used to listen to him exactly 30 years ago host a Sunday night music countdown on KLUC called the "Great American Radio Show".

1060-KKVV I recently discovered the Power Hour with host Joyce Reiley. She used to be a frequent guest on Coast To Coast AM (and still is on occasion)..Her subject matter is very interesting to me... they talk about stuff that is edgier and more extreme than you would hear on Coast. I believe it's paid programming so they have more freedom to explore subjects advertisers might be uncomfortable with.

1100 KWWN-All night with Jason Smith is solid. I'm not a big fan of their weekend specialty sports
shows.

1230 KLAV-They air the Tony Alamo ministries from 11P-Midnight. For the longest time I thought that Alamo was a kind old preacher man. It gave me the warm and fuzzy's when he would break out in song. It's only recently that I have learned about his colorful background and it is nothing less than shocking! Do a search on beliefnet Tony Alamo to read an article called "remember the alamo". I take it they are running old programs since he is currently serving 175 years in prison. At Midnight it's Jeff Rense..more ineresting subjects than Coast to Coast and I love his eerie bumper music. My only criticism is he is too obsessed with anti-zionism.

1280 KDOX-Hugh Hewitt is my favorite political talk show.Great host and great guests with a fast pace. I do wish they kept him on 9p-Mid and kept Dennis Prager on from Mid-3a. Prager is very soothing and relaxing..perfect to fall asleep to and I mean that as a compliment.

1400 KSHP-They run a fourth tier sports network called "Sports By Line". They have too many boring interviews with former athletes. I do like USA network news at the top of the hour.

I'm a night owl, mainly listen to overnight radio! (lots of music) What are your thoughts on overnights for the FMs in Vegas? Any decent air-talents or notable programs?

Reynolds is off radio according to his web site but he begins a TV gig on May 5th. His show was a bit too Noo Yawk for our rural listeners.

Funny, Miller is probably our most popular host, with Dobbs a distant second...

Actually Sports Byline is one of the oldest of the syndicated sports nets, going back some 22 years. (Sporting News Radio may have deeper roots through it's history as one-on-one and Sports Entertainment Network, but Ron Barr has been around under the same banner since 1988.)

Sure give me a few days to monitor all the stations. I'm not sure I'll have that much to say since most stations are on autopilot after midnight.

@Wyatt Cox...maybe I need to give Miller another chance or two..he could be an acquired taste.

I do have some appreciation for how long Sports Byline has been around. Ron Barr is certainly a pro, he sounds great. Just for my personal tastes I'm not interested in most of his interviews.

Drifting a bit off-topic a little, I listen to Michael Smerconish through the stream of KMZQ due to Phoenix not having an affiliate, and they're really got to get the kinks in their automation system worked out if they want to be taken seriously. Sometimes, they don't cover music between the barter spots and the show during the breaks, and when they do, many times they jump into the program in progress. You'd think Mr. Kemp could afford a system that works.

A replay of Dr. Joy Browne has replaced Joey Reynolds on KMZQ overnights.

Minor correction...the singer who advertises on KXNT during Coast is named F.X. McDonald. What an amazing voice,

Yes, Miller's show does take time to get used to because of his irreverence and his old fashioned "radio family" approach.

Sports Byline ran it's course. Barr is on early evenings and then has scrubbed the bottom of the barrel to find anyone who wants to be paid minimum wage to ask questions like "what do you like more football or basketball"? Filler programming at KSHP, which would be better off getting Sporting News Radio.

KSHP was actually really interesting sports radio when they aired play by play sports all of the time. If you are not looking to buy their coupons, the station is not worth listening to anymore. Real shame, as they had an audience when they ran play by play. Tough to beat them airing Hawaii football games on a Saturday night during football season when everyone else has syndicated sports talk progamming on the air.
