AM Radio

Check out the Sept. 1 issue of RADIO WORLD and the first in a series of articles on whether AM is still revelant.

Well, in my view, since people in political life are constantly blaming talk radio as the source of all of their difficulties, and since despite recent trends, the overwhelming majority of the talk is on AM, it is hard to argue that AM radio is not relevant.

Is the question whether or not AM radio is relevant, or is the question if Pittsburgh AM radio is relevant?

Almost all the teams have their games broadcast on FM now. The leading national syndicated talk shows are heard on 104.7. The icons that were on AM radio just a few years ago are now almost all gone- Fred Honsberger seems to be the only general talk show host that has been around for a long time.

Now, considering I have spent a long time urging the hiring of new talent in Pittsburgh, perhaps this isn't so bad. We have a poster here who owns a couple of AMs and receives praise for his programming. New formats- such as Money Talk- lead to new ideas. Sports talk on the AM is now more suited to information than shock.

But since many of the AM standards have left Pittsburgh radio, it will take time for the new programming to really grow roots.

If we start to see Sports Talk moving to FM in a major way locally, then I'd be inclined to agree with you.
It would really not leave AM with anything they could point to as their niche (except KQV, and I don't
know of any all-news stations that have gone to FM) Still, that always leaves the chance that Marty Griffin could take down the Deputy Assistant Prothonotary with a hard-hitting expose, which I suppose would keep AM relevant.
