AM scan from west Texas 8/27/16 - 8/30/16

Here’s the AM band scan from my time in west Texas. I wasn’t able to check every frequency both night and day, partly because AM was hampered by bad RFI at the hotel, which required me to go outside when I could.

I mostly used a CC Skywave and occasionally a ’14 Accord stock radio or Sony 7600GR. Below I’ve indicated the general time of day for each reception. All stations were heard in Alpine unless otherwise noted.

RE: Top Band (X-band) -- it's not incredibly different from what we hear on the West Coast, compared to the rest of the AM band listed in your bandscan.

I've heard many of those Top Band stations when conditions were good (KVNS, KRZI, KSVE [although semi-readable], KRND). Some of them I can hear when they're fair (KVNS, KHPY, & KDMT). A couple are tentatives or one logging only (WTAW, KRJO).

The rest of your bandscan consists of mostly stations I haven't ever heard.

Your 660 could be KSKY Dallas, 20kw day. Or maybe (a long shot) KTNN AZ.
I have no idea on the 650. All of the SSers are in Guerrero, Oaxaca, etc. too far away.
740 SSer is probably XEQN Torreon, Coah., if they are still on. Almost 400 miles, not bad for day!
800 is probably XEROK, the mega-blaster from Juarez. I hear them several times every season at night, with their ranchera.
880 must be Catholic station XEAAA Santa Ana Tepetitlan, JAL. They are the last XE left on 880. XEV went dark and moved to 101.7. KJOZ TX could also be a possibility.
970 is probably XEJ, also in Ciudad Juarez.
1000 is also Ciudad Juarez, XEFV, w/ 1000 watts daytime.
1030 - There's an XEIE in Matehuala, SLP, but it sure is a long ways (500+ miles in the day?)
The sports talk on 1320 could be KFNZ Salt Lake City.
1510 classic hits has to be KCKK Littleton, // 93.7 translator.
1550 with Urban religion could be daytimer WPFC Port Allen LA, 5kw. The sports is probably KYAL in OK.
KGAS Carthage is an ESPN on 1590, and probably your best bet.

An interesting scan, we don't see a lot of action from this part of the country on here. You must have had no noise whatsoever in Fort Stockton!

Great stuff, Jim. Somewhat dovetails with what I heard in February when I drove from College Station to El Paso. And identifies some of what it was that I was hearing. Thanks for posting!

Thanks guys, and thanks for the ID help, Crainbebo. My loggings from Ft. Stockton were all on the car radio, and it was indeed practically noise-free on that daytime drive.

My most unexpected logging in Pharr was KNBR on 680. I'm used to hearing KKYX dominating that frequency and having to null it the best I can just to occasionally hear a very weak KFEQ.

Earlier this week I was in Pharr, TX, which is near the Mexico border. I hope to post my AM bandscan this weekend.
