Miami/Fort Lauderdale AM Shakeup 670-990-1550

Just saw a "change" on 990 The Oasis's Facebook Page....they are coining themselves at "The Word" on 670 AM & 103.1 FM translator, along with AM 1550 & 98.7 FM translator. There appears to be construction permits...with 1550 moving from 10K daily near the beach, to 1K over off KROME (670's tower site)...while 670's translator is moving as well.

I guess that's the end of The Oasis as it looks like La Poderosa is already setup on 990....An article from 2023 in the Herald showed Salem bought these stations, but they weren't planning to make any changes. Looks like the changed their minds and ended up pushing La Poderosa on 990....thus ending The Oasis and Cadena Azul.

One thing I don't get....since they own the translators on 98.7 in Miramar and Miami, why didn't they keep 670 as La Poderosa so they could simulcast The Word on 98.7 in Miami and Broward. That would have made sense? Oh well.

Interesting. So 670 and 1550, along with their translators, are flipping from Spanish-language programming to English-language religion? But it doesn't say anything about 990.

That logo for The Word looks like one frequently used by Salem Media for its Christian Talk and Teaching stations.

If I'm not mistaken, the WRHC permit goes back decades and I believe has been hung up over environmental permitting among other things. Fccdata.org still shows the official transmitter site as being in Stiltsville.

Hmmm....does the Cuban chorus remain on 670? (My guess is yes in the near term).
That "chorus" is actually part of one of Cuba's primary national networks that is essential to their radio system. I doubt that any change in programming by the 670 station in Miami will have any effect on how they manage their own 670 operations.

I'm aware of that. But if he same places have Rebeldes on 670, 710, 1140, 1180 and 1550 is it possible they might decide to save some electricity and not run all of them eventually?

The original WRHC 1550 was a big player for many years in Spanish language Miami radio - sort of a sad end of affairs.

Salem has seen mixed success with Spanish radio formats around the country. They sold off their Seattle extended-band Spanish AM and they can't find a buyer for their similar one (1640) in Portland.

Cuba is 800 miles wide. It has the normal dreadful Caribbean island ground conductivity, so all those stations are actually needed to cover the territory.

That was about 50 years ago in the late 70's and early 80's when Salvador Lew recreated the traditional Cadena Azul in Miami. Of course, it was one station and not a "cadena" (network) but that did not matter. Along with Sales Manager Tomás Regalado, they did very well.

Despite being a daytimer, the 10 kw signal on 1550 from towers placed in the water just south of Key Biscayne, it had excellent coverage of Miami before many Cubans and Cuban-Americans moved outward to the north and south.

I hate any station file for a reduction in power. I see 1550 will still be directional with 2 towers. When 1550 was WRIZ they had a great signal in Hollywood.

Why Salem even reentered Miami in 2023 with worse signals than they had four years earlier is ponderous beyond belief. I guess someone thought 670/1550 would get some listeners after the changes to 710 and 790, but that clearly hasn't worked.

The cubans and latins in Miami and Broward are not happy with this swap. A lot of complaints in Facebook and callers on the air. They can't get the 990 signal as good as that of 670am. Some even nothing at all north of Miami and up. 670 can be heard with a good signal in the western part of Cuba, even with Rebelde jamming. I wonder how many listeners De Word on 670am would have... If their idea is to spread the word of the lord into Cuba, in English, that will fail... And in Miami too I think...

When have owners ever listened to listeners?

Rebelde has over a dozen AM transmitters all across Cuba on 670. The Miami station only is minimally listenable in a few places, and not with regularity.

That is true. But near the coast between Havana and Varadero you can nul Rebelde moving your radio and you will get 670am WWFE (daytime). It is a solid signal, better than WAQI Radio Mambi.
