AM signals booming from the south tonight

Getting strong signals from the Cubans tonight on 530, 570, 600, 640, 670 (sounds like 2 Spanish signals wiping out WSCR), Spanish on 680, 710 - sounds a lot like it did during the Aurora event we had last March. Anyone else noticing Aurora-like conditions on AM?

On 720 right now I'm hearing a weak Spanish station and NO sign of WGN. Can't hear Chicago 670, 780, or 890 for that matter. Very odd conditions tonight. This from Vermilion, OH

Sounds like auroral conditions (where stations from the South are enhanced and those from the north are attenuated).

Gotta check! KNRY, here I come...

Here in Bellevue, the East is gone. CKMX is absent, and so is CFFR. I am getting KFPT 790 alone from Fresno area, 1280 KRVM-OR with Jefferson Exchange, 1270 KPDA (or whatever the call is) Twin Falls with Comedy.

I just checked the radio after reading this thread and the usually strong WCBS is virtually buried by the Cuban station.

Only a faint trace of WCBS in the background which is rare, even though I'm so much closer to Cuba and can even hear their station on 880 in the daytime.

I was reading several reports of Northern Lights sightings last night, namely from north-central Ohio and the UP of Michigan. Will have to check again tonight. I'm about 100 miles south of buckeyes2001.

Was just wondering.... What might DX conditions be like if ... you could simultaneously see the northern AND southern lights standing on the beach at the equator, and they were blocking your view of the sun?
BTW I've never seen them from San Diego. Also I don't remember ever noticing auroral conditions on my radio. KCBS, KNBR, KGO, KFBK, KSL, etc, have always been receivable at night. I would think a good aurora should wipe out even KNX, KFI (both fairly strong daytime), even KFMB (50kW, 7.3mi NW) and KSDO (10kW, 6.3mi N)?

Groundwave is not affected by aurora. In massive events, KWYZ 1230 Everett comes in. Usually it's in the mess at night. Most of the time, 1240 is KNRY, 1340 a mix, 1400 KITZ, 1450 KSUH, 1490 KBRO. I did get KSMX-1240 on the massive Aurora in March. Full ID "Lars Larson on 1240-KSMX" around 8:30PM 3/12.

Here in Vermilion, OH I'm already hearing Cubans on 530, 570, 600, 670, and 710. This could be another interesting night indeed on AM. Hearing Spanish again on 680 too along with WPTF (and no Toronto).

KMKY 1310 at sunset, more to report in a bit. Gonna go get the headphones now...

1240-KSUE Susanville poor-fair signal, new log #457! Haven't pulled off two in a row since March...
Mention of Susanville after Geico ads, 1900 PDT. "1240-Susanville" into ABC News update. Sierra Nevada PIPELINE-alert for WA DXers

Right now near 32°45'38.6"N 116°56'44.6" W on a barefoot filter-modded SRF-M37W:

1680 KAVT Fresno, CA weak but listenable
1670 KHPY Moreno Valley, CA fairly good
1660 unID (Merced CA or Utah) co-channel carrier, barely audio, hearing what sounds like spanish music fading up
1650 KFOX Torrance, CA fairly weak
1640 KDIA Vallejo barely above noise level with co-channel offset carrier, wondering if it could be OR's Disney
1620 KSMH West Sacramento somewhat weak but listenable
1600 KAHZ Pomona fair
1580 KBLA Santa Monia fair but clobbered by KMIK Tempe
1560 KNZR Bakersfield fairly good
1540 KMPC Los Angeles fairly good
1530 KFBK Sacramento fairly good
1520 KVTA Port Hueneme fairly good (still day pattern?)
1510 KMPC Ontario weak mixing with AZ
1500 San Jose weak but audible
1440 KUHL Santa Maria weak but audible (took a 3-min break, now spanish on top but fading)
1430 Fresno weak but audible, announced espn now at am 940, KMRB San Gabriel fading up, possible also KLO Utah?
1410 spanish suspect KCAL Redlands weak
1400 giants suspect KKJL Santa Maria, mixing with others weak-fair
1390 KLTX Long Beach weak under XEKT
1380 Sacramento fairly weak
1370 weak suspect Corona
1350 KTDD San Bernardino weak but audible, plus talk (clark howard) threshold
1330 KWKW Los Angeles fairly weak
1300 KAZN Pasadena fairly weak
1260 KMZT fair with co-channel
1190 possible KEX under KGBN but threshold
1180 KERN Wasco-Greenacres somewhat weak
1160 XEQIN San Quintin playing Mex NA mixing KSL both fair (recheck few min l8r KSL fairly strong alone)
1150 KTLK Los Angeles somewhat weak
1110 KDIS Pasadena somewhat weak (suspet no groundwave night - day 80kw erp weak, night erp 2kw to me)
1100 sports suspect Vegas
1010 don't know if it's Delano or Ensenada, suspect both somewhat weak
1000 KCEO Vista or KOMO Seattle (can't tell whih) is weakly dominant, but has co-channel het
970 Bakersfield somewhat weak to fair
940 KYNO Fresno faint mixing with way offset (F below middle C) Mexicali (recheck semi fair signal)
890 KDXU St George fair
850 KOA Denver fair
840 KXNT North Las Vegas somewhat weak (recheck fairly strong)
810 KGO San Francisco fair
780 KKOH Reno fairly weak (recheck fair signal)
740 KCBS San Franiscco fairly strong
720 KDWN Las Vegas fair
700 KALL North Salt Lake City somewhat weak to fair
680 KNBR San Francisco barely above threshold (recheck fair signal)
610 KAVL Lancaster weak to fair in 600 KOGO's IBOC, also KEAR San Francisco way underneath
590 KTIE San Bernardino somewhat weak in KOGO IBOC
580 KMJ Fresno barely a carrier (recheck audible but faint)
560 KSFO San Franisco faint
550 KUZZ Bakersfield faint

I would expect NONE of those would even have a detectable carrier during an aurora, at least with the SRF-M37W's built-in ferrite.

980 KFWB Los Angeles, new #458, new #3 of the night!
1930 PDT-traffic report mentions the 405 and Orange County. Ad for Allstate followed by "KFWB" ID. I've been wanting this station for YEARS! :)

Portland gone-750 KHWG, 1190 faint carrier (KXMX?)
1220 KDOW
1330 KLBS
1340 Fox Sports-KEWE tentative
930 SS likely KHJ but not hearing the ranchera music. Just a YL blabbing in SS...
920 weak signal
940 KYNO
960 KLAD
970 faint carrier, maybe Modesto KESP
More to come

LOL, Radio Rebelde is wiping WOR off of my dial, with maybe 4 or 5 echoing transmitters...trippy, man. :)

Hunting around for more interesting stuff.

~BG

Those echoing transmitters are pointed toward WAQI. DavidEduardo knows the whole story.
Back out with the Grundig and the headphones...
