my home alternates between indiana and virginia, what are some good music stations to listen for at night. I heard one on 1700 tonight playing hotel california, but it faded out, wonder what that was.... I know how to find all the disney stations so im not looking for those, not looking for country or religious, I listen to wsm sometimes, but thats it, but im looking for stations that play either oldies, or current top 40, or hot ac with enough power to get out at night, that I many be able to catch in Indiana, or virginia, and an extra bonus if I can hear them in both places.... I have a 98 ford contour with a factory ford tape deck, and yes it has x-band............ thanks ahead fellas........... I realized I can drive around at night and listen to kcjj 1630 with a much better signal than that torch WLS, and im only 3 hrs from chicago, ironically WLS comes in better in virginia. WHAS 840 was no where to be found tonight, and im only 100 miles away, and its late at night...... hmmmm I heard one on 930 am with a mention of the great smokie mountains, but no sign of 990 from knoxville, other than garbled talk which may have been anything...

1700 Was KVNS Brownsville 880 watts at night.

Other Oldies Stations on the AM Band (that i know of)

890 (dont know where that is)
960 The gator
1410 Somewhere in Texas
1300 Plays Rock Music (led Zeppelin)
1650 Radio Free El Paso
1290 (unknown location)
1680 R&B KRJO

Thanks guys, thats off to a good start.... I should mention that I basically will listen to any music station that is non religious or country, so rock, classic rock, and rap will work too.....

Since I didn't want to start a whole new thread for this, I thought I'd put it here being that it's related in a way.

Back when I first discovered DXing, 1520 WKBW Buffalo (now WWKB) was the first station that fascinated me because it almost always came in loud and clear like a local in New Jersey at night and I thought they played the best top 40 available at the time in the early 70s. Now, they are all talk.

Because they way they direct their signal pattern, I never thought it possible to ever hear WWKB down here in Tampa so I never made much of en effort, especially because of the local Spanish station that dominates the frequency here.

Well, just before 7pm tonight, I was doing a little scan of the AM dial and came to 1520 where I heard the usual Spanish station but also something else in the background.

I slowly turned the radio and there was one perfect point where I could pretty much null out the Spanish station and got a pretty good signal from the mystery station but it only lasted for a short time. For the very brief time I listened before the news at the top of the hour, I heard the host mention something about the change of seasons and the turning of leaves in New York.

I went online to the WWKB website, looked at the schedule to see what kind of programming they have and on Sunday between 6 and 7pm, it has listed a show about wine called "Spiel the Wine". I put two and two together figuring they very well could have been talking about something related to harvesting grapes and the change of seasons and I'm wondering it was WWKB!

I've looked at AM Logbook, and it's good for identifying stations on a frequency, but I've found out that the formats listed aren't always correct.

Although WWKB is highly directional, it does come in regularly at night here in the Chicago area. In fact, it seems to be the strongest station on that frequency most nights - even though it fades in and out. If you look at one of the pattern maps (like from Radio-Locator or the FCC) getting the station out here would seem to be impossible, but I can assure you it is quite possible. Actually, KOKC (former KOMA) is the one I have yet to get on 1520 here.

Given this, I think it is quite possible - on a night with good north-south propagation - for you to pick up a signal from WWKB. I recall picking up KOMA on that frequency during the early evening in central Florida, but that was 20 years ago. Seemed to be a pretty open frequency at that time, so I'd imagine that your results will vary from night to night.

CFZM out of Toronto plays a mix of Adult Standards and Oldies. It is about the only big AM signal playing music that I can receive. (aside from WQEW 1560, Radio Disney in New York) Their signal is an absolute killer!

Some regionals I know that are playing music at night are WJAS 1320/Pittsburgh, WMBS 590/Uniontown, PA, WKHB 620/Greensburg, PA, and WSOM 600/Salem, Ohio

This has really changed because in the 60s & 70s KOMA used to come in pretty well in the Chicago area & it was very rare to be able to hear Buffalo (then WKBW). Back in those days WKBW regularly made it down to Florida at night.

WSM is heard fairly well here in VA at night but I often use the loop antenna to almost null it in order to null out WFAN's iBOC noise. The Nashville station's signal was better when I spent one night in Oklahoma. (Used the Eton E5 at a campsite)

There is a station out of Cuba (Radio Enciclopedia) on 530 that covers a lot of the U.S. at night. I don't know what kind of power they run, but it can be heard with a very listenable signal during the day here in Florida! The programming is Beautiful Music, and from what I understand it is all music by Cuban artists. Lots of pop covers. Maybe not what you'd want to listen to while driving late at night, but still an interesting catch. I believe the Turks & Caicos station on 530 is still there, and can sometimes be heard in the background (as can beacon station ZLS from the Bahamas on 526) but Radio Enciclopedia covers it up pretty well.

BTW the station on 930 talking about the Smoky Mountains was probably WSEV in Sevierville, TN. 5kW day and only 148 watts at night, so you must have heard them close to sunset.

No big deal but regularly get and ID KVNS? Brownsville TX most every nite in SW Fla -1/2 way bet. Tampa at Ft, Myers. At times the station is quite strong. Receiver: Bose wave radio. FWIW KOMA on 1520 and the Little Rock 1090 are fairly routine catches.

Like boppinvinnieb said, the Cuban station on 530 has a very listenable signal during the day. That's how I hear it here in Tampa.

The signal strength here is identical day or night and can be heard on any radio.

As for KVNS, it varies quite a bit here at night and most of the time, the South Florida station rules 1700.

And another thing. I don't know what it is but our local on 860 WGUL now has more splatter over into 870 than it used to only recently and I can hardly hear WWL during the day anymore. It almost sounds like IBOC noise but nothing like what I get from some other locals here.
