AM STEREO in PANAMA CITY

Forgive me for asking a silly question, but a website lists WPCF/1290 as broadcasting in AM Stereo/C-QUAM. Can anyone confirm this? I'm not in the area.

I cannot answer, sorry.....but I was curious.....was AM 590 AM-Stereo in the late 80s when they were B/EZ? (I forget the calls they used then) I kinda thought they would be around in that format longer than they were, as B/EZ was abandoning FM at that time.

590 did run AM stereo in the 80s if I'm not mistaken. It was turned off around the time they went Radio Disney. Or sports. I forget.

Wish I'd known about 1290, I was just in PC a few weeks ago and could have brought my Walkman.

as soon as I bring my 94 GMC pickup back from the hunting camp, I will let you know....it has CQUAM.....I took it off of 590 in mid 1997 when I had a problem with the processing.....never put it back on....now we are sports so it isn't needed.

WRNE 980 in Pensacola still advertises AM Stereo... but I think they just haven't updated their logo/advertising in the past 15 years. If they can ever get their new 106.? translator running we might find out.

I am not aware of any prohibition of C-Quam....I could be wrong....that was not the reason I took it off....there was a problem with the audio processing and it was going to be very expensive to repair.....by the way we had ZERO calls about the removal of C-Quam.

Quam

Not to hijack the thread, but WPAX in Thomasville, GA still runs C-Quam AM Stereo, and for the one person that has a receiver (the owner), it does sound pretty good.

I thought the stereo was done for when our Motorola C-Quam generator died 2 years ago, I didn't have a schematic for it, and Motorola will deny they even made it if you call for support. A few phone calls and I found a Broadcast Electronics C-Quam generator with service manual on the shelf at a station in North Georgia, so we bought that, I re-capped and aligned it, and it actually sounds better than the Motorola ever did.

The owner knows that nobody is listening in stereo, but EVERY liner and legal ID in his system, every piece of station promo gear, every sign for the station, etc... says "WPAX, 1240, AM Stereo"...so he wants to keep it that way.

I didn't realize there were any other stations around here that have run C-Quam in the last 10 years.

Of course...we are also still running the neon sign with the flashing call letters on the tower, from the 20's...probably not many of those left.

Yes we do. The station went on the air in December of 1922 with a homemade dipole antenna, and the Blaw-Knox tower was built in 1929...I still have the original hand drawings. The tower is in amazing shape (the owner believes in maintenance) and besides being an AM tower, it also holds an STL dish, a 3-bay FM antenna, the 18 ft. tall neon sign, and a VHF Marti antenna. The biggest problem we have there is that our ground radial system was paved over for a parking lot, and a road so it's not serviceable. One more interesting fact about the station...it's only on it's 3rd owner since 1922!

WRNE dropped stereo some time ago, I'm afraid, sometime before I acquired my little AM stereo Walkman. I remember bringing it down to Gulf Shores in the 90s and it being mono; I was disappointed.

I took that same radio on a trip out west and tried for a few stations still listed as broadcasting in stereo, like KTNN at the Navajo Nation, and didn't get diddly-squat. I can't seem to catch WLS at night in stereo, either. So either my luck is horrible or the radio isn't decoding right anymore. :(

We had AM Stereo at WKIZ in Key West. The car dealership that advertised with us (Chrysler) was doing a major push for AM stereo. I am sure it has been removed by now. The same fate is awaiting HD (unless you run a translator).

Speaking of WPAX-AM 1240 in Thomasville Ga is it 1,000 watts or 10,000 watts daytime? Im thinking 1,000 watts (weaker than WSBX and WHGH) that reach Tallahassee point south. I used to get WPAX-AM before when thier singal was very good now its very weak singal around the Tallahassee area.

WPAX is 1000 watts, the maximum power for that frequency.

Graveyard. Would they even be allowed to drop power below 1000 watts on that frequency or is it only X-Band 1610-1700 that have minimum power requirements?

^ Minimum? KVNS 1700 runs slightly less than 10k day/1k night, which is what almost all the X-banders run....

Is there such a requirement?

BTW I think the 1660 in NJ runs 9.8k night, but out into the Atlantic. If it covers as much real estate as the ND 1k would, seems like a waste of electricity.
