AM TRANSMITTER NEEDED

Greetings - we need a solid-state AM transmitter of from 250 watts to either 1,000 or 5,000 watts for an upgrade project. We have an excellent MW-5 now, but nighttime power is 250 watts, so we are looking for a solid-state 250 watt or 1 kw unit that will do that power smoothly and act as a backup to the Harris. Or, if we locate a solid-state 5 kw unit, it could become the main. Please contact me at [email protected] if you know where such a box could be purchased. Thanks!!

Good luck then. I don't know of too many solid state rigs on the market. I have a CCA 1000D I can sell you, but it's a tube rig.
 
That CCA is a tank, easy to retune, and a snap to fix. As a standby I would prefer it!
 
If you're just looking for a rig that will do 250W, the MW-5 can easily do that. I once modified one for three power levels - 5 kW, 500 W, and 73 W, and it performed beautifully at all three. In fact, the station actually had much less problems with the transmitter running 24/7 than they had when it was turned off at night. Granted, it's not very efficient to run at the lower power levels, but management was not going to spring for the capital expense of an alternate transmitter, and the increase in the energy bill for the facility (studio and transmitter colocated) was minimal.

The MW-5 is a fine box that sounds great.
 
Have an MW-1 that is not working...last used at 250 watts power on 1560. I believe you can have it for a dollar a watt if you'll pick it up in southern Indiana.
 
I know the late Art Silver of Harris was instrumental in modifying an MW-1 at a station I worked at for an additional power level. Besides the 1KW and 500 watt positions we had a third for PSSA of 50 watts. It did involve additional relays and a small mod to the audio driver card from what I remember. It was solid and worked fine with our remote control, too.
 
In the late 80's/early 90's I ran a Harris MW-1 with 4 power levels. The modification made it into a MW-1A. The only thing I had to do was spray R5 on the relay contacts every month. Other than that it handled 50W at nite very well.
