AM1070 WCSZ

Looking at Radio-Locator, I see that WCSZ-AM in Greenville is listed as off the air. I can't pick it up well here and haven't even tried it (or the AM band in the Greenville area) lately. What's going on....did it finally croak or something? The signal was terrible. What is its status?

According to their "Notification of Suspension of Operations/Request for Silent STA" application filed with the FCC on 7/19/07 the reason given is: "TO CONSERVE ASSETS WHILE PURSUING FUNDING, THE LICENSEE RESPECTFULLY REQUESTS AUTHORITY TO REMAIN SILENT FOR 180 DAYS."

Sadly, this venerable old AM that once boasted itself as SC's only 50,000 watt station may end up like last weeks paycheck: It aint never coming back!!!

Have they been operating at lower power for the past few years? Because I always struggled to pick them up in Spartanburg, and there's no way a 50,000 watt signal should be that weak even if it is directional.

Several years ago, I remember even picking them up in Columbia.

It HAD been toperating at about 2500 Watts for almost 2 years with no notification to the FCC, and the only reason for that? Tama Broadcasting simply doesn't want to pay the power bill for 50KW.

it's for sale too! Got $1.2 mil? You can have it!

Well the station has been awful for quite a while now, it was Sports, then Black Gospel, then Oldies, then Blues or something. If someone would buy it, run it at 50KW, and program it decently, maybe it would do something.

What kind of shape are the facilities, equipment, etc in? Maybe someone will buy it..

I remember this quote from Art Sutton back in 2006 on another thread talking about WCSZ:

"Last time I heard 1070 was not making full power since they had some major directional issues. I seem to recall that some large metal utility poles were installed near their site and there have been major detuning issues ever since. Apparently these were installed when a previous owner was not caretaking the signal and recognizing that metal objects of this nature can create havoc for AM directionals. If the issue was not addressed with the power company when built, then too bad."

It is sad to see the AM's slowly going away. As stated in my earlier post I remember WHYZ 1070 as being SC's only 50,000 watt AM station until it was stripped of that designation when WESC AM went to 50,000 watts years later.

In the 60's and 70's, WHYZ, first with its Top-40 format and later with Urban was part of a trio of extremely popular AM's in Greenville along with big country WESC 660 and Top-40 WQOK 1440. Everyone and anyone you knew listened to these AM's as most of the FM's at the time were automated and rather boring. I remember sometime in the early 70's WHYZ's building with studio and transmitter literally burned to the ground. The station was put back on the air in the mobile home and has remained there ever since.

As someone who grew up in the AM era, I still love to listen even though most of it is just talk now. Some of the newer car radios really give you a good sound on AM. By the way, if you are in the area, check out WPCI 1490. This great little AM plays a variety of nothing but commercial-free music.
