While tuning the radio dial here in Mpls I noticed a
huge signal on the dial.

It is Friday night at about 10:30.

I have a dollar bet with anyone who will take it that
these guys are running 50 KW with the daytime pattern.

They are louder than WLS WBBM WGN and WSCR.

Oh wait---these guys are a Religious station
so that means nothing will happen to them.

What time of the day was this? I think they're allowed to be on day pattern until sunset Salt Lake City (they protect KSL)

WYLL is allowed to be on their daytime pattern until KSL's sunset, which is about an hour after Chicago sunset before they switch to their night site, which also is 50kw, but aims their signal north toward Milwaukee with a slight lobe into NW Indiana. In NW Indiana, I can get WYLL only if my radio is near some soil. If I'm in an all concrete area, I get only KSL.

I see looking at the FCC site, WYLL got a bump to 50KW at night
and are now using the new 6 tower array.

I listened at 10:30 11pm 11:30 and Midnight here in Mpls at all times
they are now a new local the dial using just a portable radio.
station on
They have an amazing signal----my congrats to the Eng. boys who built
that station. The programming is not what I listen to, but still
cool to see such a loud and consistant signal.

Yes Salem now owns WIND. They swapped 106.7FM for 560AM with Univisión Radio. Their ratings were so low with the Fish that they dropped it and swapped frequencies. Now 106.7 licensed to Des Plaines IL is Spanish AC and their call letters are WPPN. WIND runs syndicated conservative talk programming. WYLL, which Salem has owned since 2000, managed to pull off getting their night power boosted to 50kw, but it required a new site to do it since their now daytime only site lacks the space needed to add towers. Also by putting it further sw of Chicago, they nearly cover the same area that their daytime signal does, while still putting a null to the west to protect KSL.

Their new pattern shoves the equivilent of about 200KW nearly due north. When I did some measurements on the array last month, I had 5+ V/M at 1KM.

While MSP is nearly 330 Deg. from here, there is quite a bit of power going that way.

Before they're upgrade, it was very hard to get WYLL-1160 up here at night. Now it bangs in here so strong and loud that it distorts.<P ID="signature">______________

Imagine 50KW into a 6 tower antenna system with all of it's power aimed nearly straight north. If you were up north of the antennas you'd get one heck of a signal...and you do!

Oh...and Thank God all the other 50KW's are doing IBOC...it sure makes 1160 sound loud!
