AM1270 back to Sports

At this point, it may be in 'DFN'S best interest to flip to something else. WDFN as we all knew it died in 2009, and what they have been since they have been back has been very underwhelming. I love listening to Matt Shepard, not really sure what to think of Eric Chase. but trying to build a station that can compete with The Ticket around those two, and only those two is nuts. Their weekend schedule is awful. I am not old enough to know what Ron Cameron was like back in the day, but now he's not worth 30 seconds of my listener time, reading twelve ads during one segment, and never having them lined up right(he admits this). They carry a lot of Fox Sports Radio, which outside of JT The Brick, Mike North during football season, and Ben Maller overnights on the weekends because I like his style, is just awful. It's so weird hearing them in cuts say, "All sports, All day". That may be true, but the people doing that aren't people that can keep an audience. The only thing I can think of that can save that signal is forget 1310 am and just go all in with the Talk format 1270 may be getting ready to ditch, and hammer home listening online, or through an app, and make it a mix of local and national talk.

Also, I am a little dissapointed that 1270's Talk format will likely end. I liked some of the moves that they made, having a local morning show, pouncing on Doc Thompson when Clear Channel... well went Clear Channel, being able to get Glenn Beck's show on. Having Coast To Coast AM which nearly every highly rated talk station seems to have. Slightly over a year is not enough time to evaluate any kind of station, and certainly sway people from WJR with their lineup. I will be interested to see how 1270's talk format finishes up.

So ESPN 1090 is really going to 1160 next month? That is a move they need to make considering the station's that broadcast on that signal, not to mention 50,000 watt Class A station WBAL.

They may as well revert back to a simulcast of 97.1 before they start running CBSSR 24/7 next year.

I'm going to guess they signed one year contracts for Langton and to clear the syndicated hosts.

I'm guessing as a result of that, they'll keep the Talk format until the new CBS Sports Syndicated content is available.

Don't know how.... They haven't moved 1160, yet.

Outside of CC gutting WDFN, what made WXYT-AM (Pre FM switch) so much more successful? Was it just simply they went after the majority of the play by play rights? Was it a matter of talent? Both? I understand once WXYT went FM that was going to be the ball game. But, prior to that, what happened?

They have the games. Some people still liked to listen to the games on AM. Even in Detroit, how many sports talkers can you have? I think WDFN is about done.

There are some less than stellar cities that have two Sports stations. once upon a time, Detroit did too. The problem is 97.1 The Ticket has been allowed to for nearly five years gobble up essentially every listener, and all of the pro sports contracts with NO resistance. I am anxious to see what materializes with ESPN 1090 because WDFN just isn't coming back to pose a threat to anyone with Clear Channel refusing to do much with that station. Also, while we love our sports here in Detroit, it's been long established that two Sports stations is good enough for most cities, and that's how it was when 'DFN and 'WXYT were on am only. 1310 going Sports with FSR programming didn't really take off.

Sportsdotcom, My guess is that it was 1270 making solid moves, eliminating some weak spots, Karsch and Anderson, and Valenti and Foster really started to take off, and WDFN just got lazy and stale. Plus, things had to have been going well enough to the point where they decided that in order for the station to really take off, they had to go to FM. It also didn't hurt that they had a mediocre rated FM station with a good signal to flip to do it.
