AM740 mashup

I'm in downtown Cleveland, Ohio which is near Lake Erie and AM740 is always "Zoomer Radio" from Toronto, Canada with varying degrees of quality, often pretty good. Today, the 740 spot on the AM dial also had a station running "The Sean Hannity Show" live in the 5pm hour. Any ideas on who might have been making it to Cleveland, maybe for the first time?

Maybe KTRH from Houston, they are a 50kw talker on 740 with 50kw. This time of the year 5pm is plenty late enough for skywave, although it was probably some abnormal conditions that would cause you to get this instead of Zoomer.

Sort of like that one night I got RCR from Venezuela on 750 overpowering WSB.

I'd bet you heard KRMG from Tulsa. AM-740 from Toronto used to be absolutely clear here in Central KY at night, but in the last few years, KRMG has become a real pest. It makes me wonder if KRMG is operating out of their licensed parameters (power and pattern).

For the record, I wasn't getting "The Sean Hannity Show" instead of "Zoomer Radio", I was getting it along with "Zoomer Radio". Both signals were battling for dominance with "Zoomer Radio" usually coming out on top, but not enough to totally obliterate the other signal.

I checked KRMG and KTRH and both run Sean Hannity at the same time, 2pm-5pm central or 3pm-6pm eastern time. I bet that would make for an interesting echo if you were in an area where you could hear both at the same time. There also is WIRJ in Humbolt, Tennessee that is a news/talk on 740 but I couldn't find a webpage or a schedule for them. At 5pm eastern time, both KRMG and KTRH should have still been on day power/pattern so I'd say either one is suspect.

I'll guess KRMG. Their day pattern is at least somewhat favorable towards Cleveland. KTRH less so and farther away.

Also, even with KRMG's night pattern, they can still be an occasional pest for CFZM here in the Chicago area.

I'd also suspect KRMG. It used to obiterate my ability hear WSB on 750 when I lived in central Mississippi and also Birmingham. It was so strong at night it was bleeding over to the adjacent channels on some radios. It was often like a local in Memphis at night as I remember it.

Even down here on the Gulf coast, KRMG is sometimes the dominant signal over KTRH in Houston or any Spanish stuff that might creep in.

Needless to say, it also has a pretty impressive daytime signal, being a lot stronger than the coverage maps suggest in Springfield, MO (160 miles east), Wichita and of course OKC at 90 miles.

AM740 used to come in here most nights really well. Back then, it was CBL. That was until the local low-power station on 740 started broadcasting after sunset even though its signal is very difficult to hear after dark. Unfortunately, despite that, it still knocks down the signal from Toronto.

Last time I spent a night in Cincinnati (Covington, actually), a couple of years back, I had no problem nulling the local 740 and hearing CFZM.

I have noticed that CFZM is getting beaten up pretty badly at times in the Chicago area lately. However, I have not been able to identify the source of the interference.

You're correct, Zach. KRMG blasts into Memphis, but you can still null it out and grab Toronto, especially in the winter months.

WELL...WELL...WELL...

Earlier in this thread, I stated that KRMG has been tearing the heck out of CFZM here in Central Kentucky at night for quite some time. I even said I suspected their night pattern/power were out-of-whack. I just read in the National Radio Club's DX NEWS that KRMG "has discovered its night pattern is out of tolerance and will reduce night power until the problem is identified and solved." They apparently HAVE applied to the FCC for an STA because of this problem. Now.... Maybe I will be able to listen to Zoomer Radio at night again without all the interference!

I can't help but think that CFZM is weaker here (SE Michigan, but not too close to WJR) than it had been a few years ago. The few times it does sound as strong as one would expect from an omnidirectional 50kw at 400km, it is usually between 1 A.M and 3 A.M.

You would think CFZM would be a regular nighttime catch here in Florida but it rarely makes an appearance.

It's most always a mix of WYGM and KTRH.

I once also heard KRMG with an ID too.

On any night, there is always at least one station way in the background of KTRH and WYGM and I wish it was KCBS.

CFZM is very strong in SW Michigan and it is often strong in the Chicago area as well. If you are in SE Michigan, such as in the Detroit area, you may be in a "skip" zone for them. Plus, they are only 20 kHz away from WJR.
