AM740 search

I'm in the Southwest corner of Cuyahoga County in Ohio. The County includes the City of Cleveland, although I am several miles south of that. AM740 for me is the often interesting "Zoomer Radio" from Toronto, Canada.

(Sidebar: It's really nice to have a station that doesn't assault your ears with political ads this time of year).

Two questions: What are the actual call letters of "Zoomer Radio". I never hear them. Do Canadian stations have to do legal IDs?

Now, tonight, I was hearing "Zoomer Radio" fairly well, when, for a short time, another station took over. It sounded like they were doing play-by-play for a high school football game. Any ideas?

Zoomer Radio is CFZM (Radio-locator still has this station listed as CHWO - their data is very outdated when it comes to foreign stations). From what I have read, Canadian stations are required by the CRTC to give full legal IDs at least once per day.

As far as the station with the HS football game, many AM stations will (illegally) 'forget' to power down/off at their required time in order to broadcast a HS football game so I suspect that is what you are hearing there.

Did you happen to hear any team names when you heard the station with the HS football game? If one of them was the Bulldogs, it may have been WRNR/Martinsburg, WV running day power. Their website shows that they broadcast all of the Martinsburg HS football games.

I ran into the exact same thing when I was in Canton, OH two weekends ago....as I posted in another thread. 740 sounded almost like a GY channel Friday night. No such problem Saturday night.

I thought Rotel was in the chili sauce business. Didn't know they also made radios! ;D

They aren't a very popular brand. I got the receiver for free from a family member that was going to throw it away, it had been sitting in their basement for years. Its an RX-300A with a date code of 1980 on it. All it needed was some dust cleaned out of it and the pots sprayed and its good as new. Sounds great on AM, they don't build the AM sections on new radios like they used to.
