AMA Awards

So...this is where the music world is heading - Justin Bieber - (not old enough to toast his awards ???) And ranking with Taylor that talks her way through songs...
This thread could be good...since I'm neutral (due to the Mrs. reminding me that the daughter has different preferences)

Oh man!! :(

Have at it!!

"The American Music Awards have nominations based on sales, airplay, activity on social networks, and video viewing..." In other words, it's like a Tiger Beat poll from the '70s.

I think that all awards programs should ban any performer using Autotune. That would cut down the field of nominees.

It'd do more than that - it would pretty much kill off these "awards shows".

Funny thing - we sound now like our parents did when we were kids and listening to the Beatles & other '60s groups...

Leonard Chess 'pitched up' Chuck Berry's vocals to give him a better chance of appealing to teens. Buddy Holly took his cue from the great Les Paul. Holly mastered the art of overdubbing vocals and guitar parts. Ringo Starr was pitch corrected. Richard Carpenter sweetened sister Karen's pristine voice (I'm a Karen fan even though I played Led Zepplin and the Doors for a large part of my career.) The Cars were a great studio band; live in concert? Not so much. Word is George Martin doctored (gasp!) a few Beatles vocals. Thomas Dolby would appear on stage with eight keyboards and three racks of MIDI processing. Thousands of production geeks and jocks have pitched our spots and voices up and down. Science! Technology and people fiddlin' with the knobs and dials have been part of making rock n' roll (and country too) for a while now. Whether it's gone to extremes can be debated, but as Bill Drake so aptly put it, "the hits just keep on comin'."

And let's not forget a disclaimer in the credits of a very popular television series of the 1970s:

"Voices augmented by other performers."

And yes, I had the first three LPs... by the Partridge Family. I was right in the sweet spot of the demographics for Susan Dey. ;D

Jim, you're spot on about The Cars.

Meanwhile, being behind the curve as usual, I just learned about a series of YouTube clips called "AutoTune the News." I LOL'd. Worth a look.

This is how radio people talk about TV shows. Bring a TV guy in, and he won't say a thing about the singing. It's all "good pictures." And it was! Lots of great visuals, lots of dancing, pyro, and costumes. If they want singing, let them turn on the radio. No simulcast to this awards show. By the way, twice as many people saw the Eagles beat the Giants on NBC than watched Taylor Swift sing in fake snow. I just want to say that I enjoy watching anything Fergie does. But that's just me. The highlight of these things is the red carpet. That's all you need to know.

I'm the "old fart" in this group because I have no idea who Justin Bieber is, nor do I care. I was among those countless millions watching the football game because to me the AMA awards, like most award shows, are boring!

But I do have a question perhaps someone can answer. I read where Susan Boyle's new CD is a hugely popular in both the UK and here in the USA. So wasn't Boyle nominated for an award if these awards are based on CD sales? Mind you I think that Susan Boyle has a beautiful voice and a lot more talent than some of the so-called singers today. Lady Gag Me is one example.

THANK YOU for the reminder Jim...and might I add these:

Andy Kim was pitched up on all his Steed imprint hits...to the point that people thought "Rock Me Gently" was Neil Diamond when it first came out!

And just recently (thanks to a link off a link off a link posted here by everyone's fave Debaser) I learned that Del Shannon, in the recording studio, could NOT hit the vocals on "Runaway" no matter how they tried approaching it. He apparently had a big case of nerves and sang flat EVERY time. Finally they gave up and the producer "fixed it in the mix"...pitching up Del's vocals to match the band.

And that was...oh heck, let's see...oh yeah. In two months and change it'll be fifty years ago.

It's probably just me but I hear Taio Cruz "Dynamite" or most anything else playing on today's Top 40 and find a resemblance to the pre-Beatles '60's in its spirit. Auto-tune and savvy producers are creating the "Peppermint Twist", "Name Game" and "Mashed Potato Time" (and let's not forget "Gravy") of today; and today's teens and even adults are eating it up like a ham sandwich.

Not that I expect a new Beatles around the corner...that was once-in-a-lifetime and I'm thankful to have been alive as it unfolded.

Sigh. I guess the good news is that they have Autotune in the rack and running in real time in live concerts. I guess that beats lip-synching, or horrible live performances.

It's CD sales and radio airplay. Not aware that she's getting much radio airplay. Not sure what format she'd fit into.

One of the interesting parts of these awards, particularly the AMAs, is that they're based partly on radio airplay through the Mediabase charts. By radio, typically that means terrestrial. A big issue for some of these reality show folks is they're not getting a lot of terrestrial radio airplay. Susan Boyle is one, but apparently Idol's Adam Lambert is another. Grammy Awards are strictly based on votes from members of the Academy, which is why artists feel it's more reflective of talent, not popularity. But Dick Clark, who created the AMA's, wanted an award that included radio airplay.
