Amarillo's Newest FM is Channel 6?

If someone is in the Amarillo area, is KXIT-LP 6 Amarillo simulcasting co-owned KIXK 96.3 Dalhart? Does KIXK target Amarillo?

There's been a growing number of LPTVs on channel 6 being turned into radio stations by basically just broadcasting audio and referencing as 87.7FM. There was alternative rock station that did that years ago in Anchorage. A LPTV on channel 6 in Dallas is running a Spanish-language religious radio format. New York got a dance FM when WNYZ-LP 6 there became "Pulse 87." I think I saw somewhere (allacess?) last week KXIT-LP was relaying KXIT-FM (that wouldn't be quite correct since KXIT-FM changed calls to KIXK several weeks ago).

Slightly (and I am using sarcasm there) illegal though......

Sadly the rules allow it.
As long as they have something on the video signal they can do a radio format on the audio.

But two important notes:
As an LPTV the coverage is limited and the legal modulation is lower on TV than FM.
Both work against it being a player as a radio station.

Also somewhere down the road the FCC will require LPTVs to go digital like their full power brethren.
So it's temporary, too.

iirc a LPTV was busted for doing just that....I dont think the rules allow it as the program audio must match the video.....having a slide up or fixed picture doesnt cut it. I'll double check the rules and see if I can find the section. Just because they DO do it, doesnt make it legal...one station in Texas splits their FM stereo into two channels for two football games...but that is NOT what stereophonic rules calls for...and Im waiting for them to get busted.

True, 25 vs 75 kHz deviation is a big difference. TV 6s usually promote that you can pick them up on 87.7 on the FM band but being 40-50kHz off and the lower deviation hurts on the fringes....plus changing from one station to another means fast punching of the volume down :)

CW...You have made me curious about both these scenarios...

Please quote the applicable rules so I don't have to go do the work of looking for them.

Thanks,
Slim

We have had one in Los Angeles on ch.6 that has been a spanish language "radio" station for a few years now at 87.7. Dalhart owner George Chambers a friend and former co-worker is always totally legal in his broadcast operations.

In the 1980s, a much smaller Clear Channel owned oldies KTAM 1240, KORA-FM 98.3, and LPTV K28AK 28 Bryan/College Station at that time. K28AK's audio was KTAM; the video was a fixed camera in the studio where the DJ was...so it was sort of like broadcasting a modern day webcam set-up in a studio today. I would assume that would be a legal way of doing this.

Back to the original question, is KXIT-LP 6 Amarillo actually relaying KIXK?

I'm no lawyer, but it would see to me that adding a $100 camera that shows what is going in in the studio would meet any requirement requiring synchronized audio and Video. That's assuming the rule actually exists, which I'm not sure of.

Actually, one of the best TV stations I've ever watched was in the early 1980's in Las Vegas, where they cut between the studio and music videos. It was a lot better than MTV at the time. It was also very low budget.

D99 (XHJD-FM 98.9) in Monterrey, Mexico operates such a setup today with DJs and music videos on cable channel 99.

Funny how everyone thinks they know what is going on w/ channel 6 Amarillo. Anyone can call and ask me before making silly statements about how legal and so on.

Hi George!

I can pick it up in the control room, but can't get it at home in SW Amarillo and I love to "see" it!

Hope all is well.

Hey Jamey,

Great to see your post. You are sounding great!
There is a pix on the station. I picked up a security camera with a shot on a sign giving the call sign and city of lic.

Stay well
George
