Amber Alert Running?

How is the 15 minutes thing working? Everyone's equipment seems to be off... I heard it properly on KBYU-FM (and TV) and on other TV stations... however WB 30 did not run a correct alert and Comcast was running no "details" on channel 10 (where one was told to turn).

I heard the alert on KSL (duh) and on a Citadel station but no one else... what's the problem with this procedure? Isn't the equipment supposed to just "run" with it like it would with a natural disaster?

The smart stations will ignore it. I know it's well intentioned, but it's a major inconvenience with no positive result for 99.9% of the people it's being lobbed at. People were turning off the radio last night because of this.

And that's not even mentioning things like the highway variable message signs. People were trying to see what the sign said in case it was something actually important.

No, one isolated incident isn't worth a half a ton of garbage strewn about.

Stations can choose which alerts will be automatically relayed. The only three alerts that the FCC *requires* be relayed are EAN, EAT, and RMT. (Emergency Action Notification, Emergency Action Termination, and Required Monthly Test. Stations are also required to *originate* a RWT - Required Weekly Test. "Emergency Action" can be called only by Washington - basically it means you're about to get nuked.)

Even if a station did choose to automatically relay all alerts, CAE (Child Abduction Emergency - "Amber Alert") is a relatively recent addition to the EAS system. Many EAS boxes require firmware upgrades to support CAE.
