Amber Alerts

The Nurse and I vote to get rid of them. Too repetitive, too obnoxious, and not enough facts as to whether someone has really been abducted. The recent joy-ride to Blythe wasted everyone's time.

MCSO "screwed the pooch" on this one, to be sure! That said, I don't think Amber Alerts should necessarily go away; we just need law enforcement to issue Amber Alerts only if they can ascertain with certainty that a child abduction has actually occurred!

Maybe Ankarlo needs to teach Joe about "probable cause" and what it means. ;D

A good idea, ruined by over hype.

What's next, breaking into the news for every crime?

The TV stations love it because its LIVE and EXCITING and they can devote 5 minutes to putting some barbie doll up on camera standing in a vacant lot to tell you all the details with an excited look on her botoxed face.

Once you exploit something that was well meaning in the quest for ratings, it jumps the shark.

So, this previous Amber Alert turned out to be a false alarm, therefore let's get rid of them entirely? That's like saying "well, the last tornado warning issued wasn't followed by a tornado actually touching down or killing anyone, so let's scrap them totally."

To me, the Amber Alerts are necessary, if it saves a life or multiple lives--as they have in the past, then it's worth it. I understand that an Amber Alert interrupts your precious radio and TV programming with the inconveinience of reality. I know, how dare I challenge the egocentric thinking of those that dislike the Amber Alerts because the 2 minute announcements ruin their whole day to the point where they cry to radio/TV stations... and on this board. I read some of the posts on the TV board, too--come on people... really, wake up.

On one hand, I read countless posts by those who say "radio and TV no longer serve the community", then when they do things to serve the community, such as issue Amber Alerts, the same people come here and say, "Why are we airing such nonsense!!??!!?" Pick a side and stay with it.

Why can't the TV stations "pause" their programming during the Amber Alert, so that when they rejoin, the audience doesn't miss anything? Then to get back to real time, they can chop thirty seconds off the next commercial break to compensate! Oh, wait... I think I found the reason.

I think the Amber Alert is a great tool to have. And the idea of waiting to confirm the validity of the "kidnapping" before reporting it is retarded. By then a kid could be dead, molested, or (at the very least), further away from home. What if it was one of my kids? Your kids?

Plus, "24" is lame. Interrupt it all you want. :)

is Akbar still getting off on the scroll feature where you are? Lame.

On the one hand, I think the freeway sign and radio Amber Alerts are well done -- concise, quick description, a make/model and license plate number when available. I signed up for the free Amber Alert text messages waybackwhen, and I only get one of those every three months or so.

That said, I do agree that the TV Amber Alerts get a little out of hand. I think if they were as brief as the others, people wouldn't mind nearly as much. Maybe even do them as a scroll instead of a break-in.
