American Idol Clobbers The Grammys In Ratings

From what I've noticed over the past few years, it seems like the Grammys are trying to attract a younger crowd..most noticable is the use of the MTVesque crowd "pit" where people are screaming throughout the song.

Younger crowds aren't going to watch the Grammys, esp. when you have 19 other music award shows (RMA, MTV, AMA, ACM...)

Yeah, I know. During the WTIC-TV (FOX) channel 61 news in Hartford, anchorman Brent Hardin crowed about that in their "Arts and Entertainment" segment. Seeing that smirk on his face when he read "...which aired here on FOX 61" got me so disgusted. I won't bother e-mailing their News Director (Paul Lewis) since I already know what he'll say: "Many of our viewers would like to know that since it is a very popular show, etc." Somebody tell these anchors to stop kissing corporate ass. Enough! (I only had their news on because it proceeds the Connecticut Lottery drawings around 10:30 PM ET.)

P.S. I HATE "American Idol"!<P ID="signature">______________

What will be interesting to see is how Idol does against the Winter Olympics, especially against figure skating.

In recent years, the Grammy Awards had been held on a Sunday night. This year, they were moved to a Wednesday night (and held a few days earlier than usual) to avoid coliding with the Winter Olympcs (indeed, the Academy Awards were pushed back a week, to March 5th, to likewise avoid going head-to-head with The Games Of Turin/Torino).

I would think that the next three years, the Grammy's will again be held on a Sunday. The competition could still be significant, assuming "Desperate Housewives" and "The Simpsons" remain on Sunday nights next season.

The Olympics will face competition from "Idol" on five nights: This coming Tuesday (February 14th, the second half of the secopnd-round auditions), Wednesday (the 15th, the announcement of the 24 semifinalists), and three nights the week after that (Tuesday the 21st, when the first 12 semifinalists sing; Wednesday the 22nd, when the other 12 semifinalists sing; and Thursday the 23rd, when the field is reduced from 24 to 20).

Thursday the 23rd is the night when NBC will be showing the "long program" in women's figure-skating, which traditionally draws the largest TV audience of any Winter Olympics telecast. Although NBC is also scheduled to show the men's aerial freestyle skiing finals and the women's parallel giant slalom snowboarding finals in prime-time that night, I would not be surprised if both events get shown during the afternoon (4-5 P.M. ET/PT) broadcast instead so NBC could devote the entire four-hour (8 P.M.-12 Midnight ET/PT) prime-time broadcast to figure-skating.

If my memory serves me correct, 30 competitors skate in the first round (the "short" program on February 21st) with the six lowest-scoring contestants eliminated and the 24 others going to the "long" program. With the competition being on tape, were NBC to devote the entire prime-time show to figure-skating on the 23rd, the network can elminate "dead spots" (i.e. breaks uring which the zamboni making new ice, which occur about once an hour) and still show the long programs of all 24 finalists and have plenty of time for commercials, interviews, features, etc.

My guess: "Idol" may actually beat the Olympics by a narrow margin among teenage girls, and will be second (but maybe a distant second) behind the Olympics among all other demographic groups. It will be the only program that is able to compete in the ratings against The Winter Games In Turin/Torino.

NBC can spread figure skating over the entire night on the 23. It doesn't
have to start 8pm vs 1 hour special Thursday night Idol episode.

Zambonis? You're the master of minutia.

ABC's Dancing with Stars finale is also scheduled for that night
but they are already talking about pushing it back a week.
The women's final will win the night with or without any competition.

Assuming?!

Good God Joseph. Do you ever check in from time-to-time with reality?

Anyone who thinks that ABC would move "DH" from Sundays at this point should refrain from every posting on this board again.

Prior to the past couple of years when the Grammys were held on a Sunday, they've been held on Wednesdays.

Networks have done strange things with hit shows, sometimes moving them to other nights of the week where they have died in the ratings.

I would think the odds are about 98 percent that "Desperate Housewives" and "The Simpsons" will remain in their current timeslots this coming Fall. But there is a two percent chance ABC and Fox respectively might do something potentially foolish and move either show out of it's current timeslot.

Given how important Thursday nights have become to the networks (mainly due to movie studios willing to advertise films coming out the next day), I think there is a two percent chance that either "Simpsons" or "Housewives" could be moved to Thursdays.
