American Spirit Media buys WAAY Huntsville, to be run by WAFF

Calkins Media is exiting the broadcast TV business, having agreed to sell its three small-market ABC affiliates to Raycom Media and its duopoly partner, according to a memo to station staffers from Calkins CEO Mark Contreras obtained by TVNewsCheck.

Under the agreement, Raycom will buy Calkins Florida stations, WWSB Sarasota and WTXL Tallahassee. American Spirit Media will buy WAAY Huntsville, Ala., which will presumably be operated in tandem with Raycom's NBC affiliate in Huntsville, WAFF.

The memo did not mention a sale price. FCC filings that would include the price have not yet been made.

What will happen to WAAY's news department? Will WAAY eventually move to a WAFF subchannel?

WAAY's news presentation has, unfortunately, become third-rate in the Huntsville market in the last 10-15 years. I highly suspect that it will be shut down entirely in the next few months; Raycom doesn't want a competitor to their highly-rated WAFF newscasts. As far as the subchannel possibility; I suspect that's remote at best. WAFF already has two subchannels being used for Bounce TV and Grit TV. I think it's more likely that they'll keep ABC on WAAY (for now, at least) and the news departments will be combined and (possibly) simulcast, to some extent, on WAAY (similar to the "First Coast News" setup in Jacksonville where WTLV and WJXX simulcast news on both channels). Time will tell, though....

well another national tragedy has been averted (roll eyes) because I know you were so worried about what would happen to a station in an area that isnt your market
