AMERICAN TOP 40 Affiliates Past and Present

RMarino said:
Shortly thereafter, they dropped it and it went to market-leader WRBQ (Q105) until Casey's final show in 1988. Q105 carried exactly one week of Shadoe's AT40 before dropping the show entirely. However, they did air Shadoe's year end 1988 countdown on New Year's Day 1989.

In other words, Q-105 was still receiving the show, and AT40 still had the station on its affiliate list - but the station was (unbeknownst to the AT40 people) refusing to air the shows for months.

If the AT40 people found out Q-105 was failing to air the show without even telling them, AT40 should have come down hard on Q-105 for depriving of it an affiliate that actually aired the show.

In Detroit, I believe the first station to air AT40 was the original WDRQ 93.1 FM in the 1970s. In the early and mid-80s WHYT 96.3 FM, which started as a Mike Joseph "Hot Hits" station in September '82 and morphed into a more conventional CHR within a year, aired AT40.

In the early 1990s, WKQI 95.5 FM (Q95) aired Casey Kasem's AC show ("Casey's Countdown"), then switched to the Hot AC edition ("Casey's Hot 20") around September 1994 or so. No Casey's Top 40 at the time, as Detroit did not have a real CHR at that point in time. WKQI started airing AT40 around 2000 or 2001 or so, and continues to do so to this day. Clear Channel AC sister WNIC 100.3 now airs the AT10 AC show.

Similarly, in nearby Toledo, WVKS 92.5 FM (Kiss FM) is the AT40 station and AC WRVF 101.5 (The River) airs AT10.

No other AT40 affiliates in Michigan today AFAIK, but the AC show is also heard on WCRZ 107.9 (Cars 108) Flint and WLHT Lite Rock 95.7 Grand Rapids. I remember hearing the Hot AC Top 20 version aired on WLXV 96.7 (Mix 96) in Cadillac in northern Michigan but I'm not sure if they still do.

I believe WHSB 107.7 FM (The Bay) in Alpena airs the Hot AC version of AT40 on Sundays.

My bad... I just realized that the affiliate list from a Japanese AT40 fansite I was looking at online only listed stations that STREAM AT40 - and it also was not a complete list. Sorry for the confusion.

According to other sites I've visited, other AT40 affiliates in Michigan currently airing the show include WKFR 103.3 Battle Creek/Kalamazoo and WIOG 102.5 Bay City/Saginaw/Midland/Flint (both CHR/Pop). WKHM-FM (K105.3) in Jackson also airs it, according to their website, though I'm not sure if it's the CHR or Hot AC version (probably the Hot AC since their general format is Adult CHR). During my college years (1998-02), K105.3 aired Casey's Hot AC Top 20.

In northern Michigan, WKPK 106.7 FM (The Peak) Gaylord aired Casey's Top 40 on Sunday mornings in the mid-1990s; I remember listening to it one Sunday morning as I was getting ready to go home from a weekend up north, and it was a treat getting to hear it since I lived in the Detroit area which did not have a true CHR at the time. By 1997, IIRC, WKPK had dropped it and the show moved to competitor WKHQ 105.9, which I believe still airs it today. I also remember hearing Casey's AC countdown when it was still a top 20 on WLXT 96.3 (W-Lite), WKHQ's sister station; they aired it Sunday evenings.

WVKS 92.5 Kiss-FM Toledo has aired AT40/Casey's Top 40 for as long as I can remember; I used to enjoy DXing them from the northern suburbs of Detroit on Sunday mornings when I was in high school.

I have heard old airchecks of WHYT 96.3 featuring promos for AT40, so I can confirm for sure that WHYT was airing AT40 in 1983-1984.

Going farther back in Toledo, I think WOHO-AM 1470 (now WLQR) aired it in the early '80s.

I also have heard that CHYR-AM 710 Leamington, Ontario, which had a strong signal in Detroit, aired AT40 during the 70s and 80s, and I think I remember WDFX-FM 99.5 (The Fox) airing the Shadoe Stevens version of AT40 in the late 80s and early 90s (by then WHYT had gone very heavily Rhythmic and had dropped Casey's show, IIRC). Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this.

In south-central Indiana in 1971-72, we got it out of Terre Haute on WTHI 1480. I don't believe any Indy station carried it at the time.

And in Chicago, IIRC, WBBM-FM 96.3 carried AT40 in the late '70s after WCFL bit the dust, but my memory's a bit fuzzy there.

...my first taste of the show was over KFIZ/1450 in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, Sundays at (I seem to recall) 7:00 P.M. on Sunday nights starting in 1972. Kasem struck me as a lame jock back then, too ;-) ...
