American Top 40, heard on great radio stations like...

Old American Top 40 shows are being rebroadcast on stations like WODS and XM/Sirius (they dropped the 80s but still run it on their 70s station). A friend sent me some that he recorded off KOLA in LA and a couple times when Casey did his "...is heard every week around the world on great radio stations like..." bit, I heard him mention:

"WCGY Lawrence Mass". Yup, definitely remember it being on 93.7
"WMEX Boston" early 70s, 1510
Trying to remember what other stations ran it...WBZ? Kiss 108?

I also remember maybe it wasn't on in Boston but I could pick it up on the old WHEB 750 Portsmouth when
I lived in Nahant. There was some splashover from WCAS 740 though. (It was on late Sat morning)

Noticed book at Bev library about the show, "AT 40: The Countdown of the Century" I guess it came out about 10 yrs ago. Would have checked out but they said it was for reference only, couldn't be checked out
(maybe will read it at library itself). amazon.com says it's expensive/rare

Any memories of AT 40 in Boston? Other stations that ran it?

Ah, good...don't know if it was ever on WRKO during its top 40 yrs but WROR, that sounds right.
Maybe WVBF aka "F-105"? They may have well run it.

I think Dave Maynard may have done a top 40 show on WBZ on Sunday mornings in the early 60s. Though it may have only been top 30. I don't remember for sure, but he definitely did a weekly countdown.

AT40 was also aired on WZOU 94.5 during the Shadoe era. They stopped airing it in February 1993 a few months before they went Jam'n.

"The Countdown of the Century" was written by former AT40 staffer, and my former Mediabase colleague Rob Durkee. Came out 10 years ago, and is a fascinating read with some chart goodies in the back as well.

WBZ wasn't strictly a talk station until some time in the 90s. As the 80s progressed, they cut back on the music during the daytime (and were all talk at night IIRC), but they still did play some music, mostly AC-ish stuff and oldies. I think there was more music on the weekends when sports weren't on.
Did WBZ pick up AT-40 in the mid 70s when WMEX went away? I don't recall either WVBF or WRKO picking up the show.

WBZ had Dick Clark's "National Music Survey Top30" on Sundays in mid-80s. Pretty sure AT40 was still on WROR 98-5 at the time.

I don't know what else WBZ was broadcasting in the mid 80's, but I can guarantee you that they were broadcasting "American Top 40". I just searched my archives and pulled a clip from March 9th, 1986. Click the link below to go back in time.

Definitely on WBZ-AM in the 80's. I will never forget when they ran Casey's top countdown of the year of 1987 and skipped over #4. When I checked Billboard magazine, I found out it was "I Want Your Sex."

I used to listen every night. Bruce Bradley may be my favorite radio personality of all time.........for sure my favorite DJ. Good old Juicy Brucie. Is he still with us?

I do recall hearing that WMEX was one of the very first stations to sign AT-40 along with their sister station WPGC in Washington... and yes Art, last I heard Bruce was enjoying retirement in AZ.

AT 40 was first on in Boston on WMEX 1510. WMEX was one of the original 5 stations that first broadcasted him on July 4th 1970. It remained on WMEX until the Spring of 1975. It was off the Boston airwaves for about 2 years. WCGY picked it up around I think late Spring/early Summer 1977. While it was on WCGY, WROR 98.5 picked it up around 1980. They ran it till about 1985 when it probably was taken off ROR by the ABC networks when they forced AT 40 outlets to also pick up inventory from the ABC Radio Networks. When they resisted, ABC moved them to another outlet. That's how it ended up on WBZ since they were an ABC Radio affiliate station. WCGY dropped it around Spring 1987. WBZ ran it for a few years and it was picked up by WZOU around 1987. WZOU picked up Casey's Top 40 around Spring 1989 moving AT 40 with Shadoe Stevens to Saturdays 6 AM and CT 40 to Sundays 8 AM. Both were dropped when ZOU changed to WJMN. WVBF 105.7 did pick up Casey's Top 40 for a short time after Jamn 94.5 dropped it. After that Mix 98.5 picked up Casey's Top 20 (Hot AC) for a few years. After that I think he changed networks to CC's AM/FM Radio Networks and he regained the rights to AT 40.

Not to get wayyy off topic, but the 60's WBZ PAMS jingles sounded horrible - almost parody like. Then again, I always thought that finger snab between the W & BZ was a whip crack....
