American Top 40 on Star 94

I noticed this morning that the "Hot AC" version of AT40 was playing. I wonder if this is the beginning of Star 94 segueing into the Hot AC format.

I remember Star 94 experimenting with the Hot AC version of Rick Dees from the Spring of 2002 to about midway through 2004. Some weeks between this period they would flip-flop back and forth between the top 40 and hot AC versions and on some weeks they would mix the two versions up into one show to have a mix of all of the songs that Star played off of both charts. It seemed like the flip was based on which chart was more "adult" sounding that week. Then in January 2004 when AT40 started up, you had a top 40 countdown on Saturday night with AT40 and a hot AC countdown on Sunday night with Rick Dees. I remember Star 94 in mid 2004 eventually went to playing the top 40 versions of both countdown shows.

I noticed that this morning as well. Upon hearing it, I started thinking maybe they should stick with the Top 40 version and not go with the Hot AC version.

I'd like to hear True Oldies carry Premiere's 1970s AT40 reruns, and B98.5 the 1980s reruns.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say, "I wonder if this is the beginning of Star 94 segueing into the Hot AC format."

Star 94 has been in the Hot AC format since last month. Compare the national CHR and Hot AC playlists to what Star is playing, and you'll see for yourself.

If Star is going to separate itself from Q100, which apparently is the objective, I think they're going to have to drop the Hit Music positioning and replace it with something like "Today's best music." But that's probably difficult because Star has a lot of equity in that positioning.

Our Movin 97.5 KMVA here in Phoenix (Who still carries their rhythmic ac mixshow on Saturday nights) seems to be going Hot Ac. To be honest, I am confused to what a Hot AC is REALLY supposed to sound like, if Star is also being called Hot AC, so I wont even discuss it too much, as maybe somone else can clarify. Here's a link to what is going on here with our "Hits from back in the day & today station":

I'm sure Star 94, although they are playing many of those pop rock bands that I mentioned there, is not also including old school slow jams from New Edition, Keith Sweat, Ready For The World and old school hip hop from Kriss Kross, TLC, Positive K... amongst the Miley Cyrus, Fray, Kings of Leon, Train....etc. Like our "Hot AC" Movin 97.5 here in Phx. They also play "borderline" by Madonna and "short short man" by Gillette. No Ace of Base, UB40, or Fine Young Cannibles. No old school alternative or retro, and no Rob Thomas.

At one point, our Movin was Rhythmic AC. Now I'm not exactly sure what they are, especially if Star 94 is what Hot AC is supposed to be. They both sound completely different.

So... I'm really confused at what Hot AC is, and who's being the REAL Hot AC. Hmmmm..... maybe eventually, The Groove will go "hot ac" too, like our station here in Phoenix.

...And what is Adult AC?? Seems like there are so many AC's everywhere!

I guess that is my question. When are they going to officially report themselves and image themselves at "Hot AC." Yes, they are playing all of the music off of the Hot AC chart, but they are still announcing like they are a "hit music" station. I know the "hit music" moniker is working well for them but at some point they are going to have to drop that. When a station like this eases into a lighter format, instead of drastically changing formats overnight, it seems that web services like ratings reporting and directories will list it as pop or top 40 for a long time.

Does anybody remember when Z 93 went Urban and did not tell anybody?

Yes, and I also remember that nobody listened.

Then, in the summer and fall of 1988 they dumped every pop record that was currently on the chart back into the rotation in an attempt to salvage the station. Didn't work.

How did that affect Q100? Power 99 stuck a fork in Z-93.

And 94Q still couldn't decide if they were CHR or hot AC. Some things never change.

Hopefully, Star 94 awakens from this long, bizarre "NAP" and finally, either identify themselves correctly by the music they play (as a HOT AC) or flip to something else entirely! But, here's an interesting question for discussion. A situation that is only unique because RYAN SEACREST just HAPPENS to have started his career at Star. But, could...(or would) "AMERICAN TOP 40" (with Ryan as host) finally move to a station (I guess like Q 100)? I think it's ridiculous that "AT 40" here in Atlanta is altered and edited so that it's not heard in it's TRUE FORM! It's great that Ryan is heard on his original hometown station but, if YOUNG MONEY'S "Bedrock" is the #18 song in the nation or better yet, TIMBALAND'S "Carry Out" is #14....THEN I WANT TO HEAR IT PLAYED ON "AT 40" (AS IS)! "AMERICAN TOP 40" should be able to run like normal on a real Top 40 station. Of course, Q100 would never play of these hits either........LOL, WHAT A MESS!

Any thoughts?

At least Ryan is local. That makes some of the down-side almost worthwhile?

So, Is all of 94's problems programming or a combination of management and programming. Who's calling the shots? I know they are looking for a new GSM!

My comment is "American Top 40" related. I enjoyed "American Top 40" when it was Billboard-based and played whatever were the best-sellers in any given week. Yes, they would play songs that the station otherwise would not air, but it was a special and in that sense worked. Now it seems like they have to fake-up a chart.

I am beginning to wonder why is Atlanta the Bermuda Triangle of Top 40 stations? What's REALLY causing everyone to beat around the bush and think of anything other than Top 40 in Atlanta? Why is it such a sin? What is causing it to be forbidden in that city?

Dunno. ATL hasn't had a real top 40 since Power 99.

I heard Bedrock on the Beat last week.

Call me Fred Flintstome cuz I can make your bed rock.

Classic ;D
