American Top 40 on WOGL-HD2

I was listening on Sunday to 'OGL's HD2 channel and was happily surprised to hear a broadcast of Kasey Kasem's American Top 40 from the '70's. Of course, 98.1-HD2 is the "all 70's channel". If you're into that era...and hearing Kasey's Top 40, check it out...I was listening in the 4:00 - 5:00 hour.

The shows must be in syndication. XM runs the 70's shows on Saturday's at noon on their 70's channel, and I think on Wednesday as well. The shows Casey did in the 80's are also run on XM's 80's channel on Sunday at noon, but I'm not sure when the weekday play is.

You're right...XM airs Casey also. I was just surprised to hear 'OGL running it now...just didn't expect I'd hear that on the local airwaves.

They are syndicated and edited into 3 hour shows...I just read about it on wikipedia I think

WODS Boston is now playing all four original hours of AT40 - unedited. It's pretty cool, actually. So, these shows must be in syndication as well. As WOGL is also a CBS Radio-owned station, it doesn't surprise me to hear this.

To me, having "Sounds of the 70s" on WOGLs HD-2 channel has been a waste! Heck, the main channel is mostly 70s these days and Sundays are all 70s as well. So, it's good to hear that someone finally has a clue that you need to provide some value on the HD-2 channel to make it worth bothering with.

They're this Saturday morning and every Saturday morning at two. TWO!?!?

;D

That's probably just XM snipping the commercials.

When XM-8 runs them, I can't figure out how they go about picking the year in the decade on any particular day. Does anyone know about how they do it?

They usually pick a week that's close to the time of year you're presently in. This past weekend, XM 80s on 8 played a show from May of 1983. As for a replay of the Sunday show on XM 80s on 8, I think that's at 10 PM eastern on Thursdays. It's so cool to have these rebroadcasts available! I irritate a couple of coworkers with it playing (since they're younger than me), but that's too bad! :)

Lastly, the contract XM has for these replays must be with with Casey Kasem exclusively, as you will only hear episodes from his start in 1970 up until when Casey's contract expired in the summer of 1988. As for Shadoe Stevens, when did his run with the show end? 1994 or so?

I am not so sure that's true. The very first AT40 was for the week of July 4, 1970; the show didn't exist before that. Also, the later AT40 programs may not be as marketable - as they are from a time when "Top 40" radio was pretty much gone thanks to fragmentation. Clearly the shows with the most interest would be from the 1970's as that was the heyday of the program. Those from the early to mid 80's could be of interest too - having some lesser nostalgic value for those who came of age during the period.

By 1988, AT40 was losing steam and Casey was replaced with Shadoe Stevens. Not to say that those later shows could never pop up on XM or Sirius, but I wouldn't expect them on terrestrial radio. Not enough appeal. IIRC, Rick Dees and "The Weekly Top 40" was eating AT40's lunch by then - Dees was mixing in artist interviews and comedy with the countdown to freshen up the concept.

You think in twenty years from now, we'd be hearing old Jeff Foxworthy's country countdown reruns on XM?

Possibly ... but I think in 20 years of the "Best of Hannity" on XM as, of late, he seems to be phoning it in and hasn't changed his act in over a year day-to-day.

XM could just loop it.

In 2006, Premiere Radio Networks launched "Casey Kasem's American Top 40: The 1970s" into syndication for terrestrial radio.

As early as 2001, they also syndicated reruns of 1980-1988 episodes under the name "American Top 40 Flashback."

As mentioned earlier, it seems that WOGL is running the 70s version on their main channel early in the morning. I recently caught it following Bob Pantano at 2am. It as interesting to hear the mono to stereo transitions. In the early years of AT40, the original show was mono, so now they have to insert stereo versions of songs for the new Flashback show. It's also funny hearing the Casey of today doing WOGL IDs leading into a younger 1970s Casey. Quite a difference!

"AT40 The 80s" is also in sindication. I'm listening to it now on the CBS station from Baltimore, 102.7 Jack fm. As for the other questions, the show ran from july of '70 thru jan '95 but Casey left the show in August of '88 and thats where Shadoe came in. Most ppl identify AT40 w/ Casey kasem so you should NOT hear any guest hosted shows and certainly no Shadoe shows (allthough XM did air 1 guest hosted show last year)

Incidently, Rick Dees is coming back also, look for the Weekly Top 40 retro shows on XM 8 starting June 7th. Or so I *hear*
