American Top 40 Turns 40

The only reason I bring this up in the Country forum is because Casey Kasem (original host of AT 40) went on to co-create American Country Countdown (hosted by Don Bowman, later by Bob Kingsley and today by Kix Brooks.) Of course, Bob Kingsley left ACC a few years back to host his own show, "Country Top 40."

So, American Top 40 and Casey Kasem paved the way for a lot of the programs we hear today, even on Country Radio. This 4th of July is truly a historic day not only for our great nation, but it's also a historic day in radio!

Yesterday (July 4th), the first "American Top 40" countdown was played on "American Top 40 - The '70s" which airs on '60s and '70s stations ... at least that's the one I heard. It was for the week of July 11th. The Country-related hits were, the double-sided hit at #9, "The Wonder of You"/"Mama Liked The Roses" by Elvis Presley, and at #24, "Teach Your Children" by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young (heavy use of a steel guitar gives it a Country touch). It's interesting to note that CSN&Y had two hits climbing the chart at the same time. This one, and the "Ohio", about the Kent State shootings of just a few months earlier.
