Americans in Canada

Here's a question: Is it possible for an American citizen to work at a Canadian radio station? Anyone know of anyone who has done it? I remember hearing how CKLW served Detroit, and I guess some of the announcers were probably from south of the border, but what does it take to gain employment in Canadian radio?

Exchange Rate

Americans can, and do, work in Canada. You have to go through a somewhat arduous procedure to obtain a "Work Permit", which has a time limit and must be renewed periodically. This is true of broadcast talent, members of sports teams, and anyone else who wishes to work in Canada for any length of time.

Generally, you and your employer have to justify the fact that you're taking a job away from a Canadian citizen. This is not as difficult when you're talking about a subjective position like air talent. It is somewhat more difficult for engineering and non-entertainment personnel.

You also have to resolve issues regarding the monetary exchange rate with your prospective employer.

I have worked on many jobs in Canada, and labor included as part of new "installation" related to new sales is no problem.

On the other hand, any service work or "ala carte" job must first satisfy an "economic impact" test where the prospective employer involved
must declare that there is no Canadian who is capable or available to do the job.

In a printing press industry job, this was no problem in my specialized area, but still a headache each time.
I don't know if broadcast postions would be likely to meet this criteria, but Canada is very protective on this issue.

I wish you luck.
