You might have enjoyed comments from Don Berns, aka BernsWithAnE, Debaser or DesiBell. He worked at WKBW and WPHD Buffalo before he successfully transitioned to CFNY, Toronto. Problem is Don/Desi doesn't post here any longer, most likely because he couldn't overcome the problems with signing on to the new board. Pity. He was a good contributor and he's missed on the Buffalo/Niagara Falls/rochester board.[/Mike]

How long ago did he move into Canadian broadcasting? Any details about his experience that you remember? It's understandable that they want to try to protect jobs for Canadians....and this is probably one of the reasons why there is almost no one posting experiences about immigrating and getting work in radio recently in Canada -- that's an American expat. Also, salaries are lower, and taxes higher.

"Also, salaries are lower, and taxes higher."What are taxes for anyway? Many who whine about high taxes have no clue what's been cut to keep them down til' it hits them in the face, at which time it's too late.Let's use road repair as an example. Cutting taxes to put a thousand in your pocket with the kind of road neglect that puts over a thousand dollars in car repair in the pocket of a body shop isn't putting you any further ahead. Plus, Canada has health care and blah blah blah...we are now most likely going to be moved to the off the air board thanks to me (lol :p)

I think we're getting off topic here. But clearly the examples mentioned in the other post thus far are references to the 1970s and 1980s. There is so far, no one posting anything about anyone in the 1990s or 2000s.It's amazing that in a global/modern world, it seems radio and broadcasting have become more national/territorial in some ways, at least in as much as an American can't find a job "on the local economy" in Canada.I'm still holding out hope we'll hear from someone more recent..... there must be someone out there to share their story....!

In the meantime, those who wish to be heard in Canada are finding jobs in border towns. Some that serve Canada intending to sound like a "Canadian" station. Java Joel Murphy is the most recent example, doing afternoon drive for 94.7 Hits FM, a station that serves Montreal Canada from the American side.

But then one can't become a Canadian, eh?

If you know how to make it so, please feel free to post it here. As I said before, there's a new Federal Government in Canada now (minority Gvt) so let's just wait for a bit and see if anything changes...(and it may...)

I think what people fail to realize is that there is an attitude ingrained into 99.9% of Canadian employers NOT TO HIRE anyone not Canadian-born and educated.

We've seen this in many fields, experienced this same story from many US citizens and others whom immigrated to Canada or otherwise had temporary work authorization......and could not even get interviewed.

It's the 'dirty little secret' that no one associated with immigration in Canada will admit....and lots of people get burned financially because of it.

Didn't "Iron Mike" Bensson head up to Hitz-FM in St. Catharine's in the early '90s? He's still there, doing mornings AFAIK.
