America's Birthday Party Weekend; KRQ

Lady - Modjo
Better off alone - Alice Deejay
Don't Stop - Freestylers
My Boo - Ghost town Dj's
Call on me - Eric Prydz
Heaven - Dj Sammy
Love you down - Inoj
Everytime we touch - Cascada

What do these songs have in common? They were ALL just a brief summary of back in the day hits that are being played here on 93.7 KRQ (in addition to today's hits... and you already know what today's hits sound like...) all weekend long for America's Birthday Party weekend! The mixes are boring, but the weekend thing they're doing is interesting (and even more enjoyable than all 8 or so hours Planet Q to some degree).

Hot 98.3 KOHT is in the mix all weekend long.

91.3 has drum & bass and breakbeat mixes sometimes. Not sure of the exact times though. This is what's happening here in Tucson. I'm pretty amazed and impressed.

I wonder if any freestyle was ever played in Tucson, the same way Power 92 in Phoenix used to play it back in the later part of the mid 90's? Normally when KZZP did the back in the day weekends like this, they'd also include "set u free" by Planet Soul. So far, I've heard nothing like that played here in Tucson.

Actually, 91.3 KXCI has been playing mixes either Friday or Saturday nights since the early 90's (actually Wednesday nights for a few years).

KRQ has randomly thrown in artists like Darude, Daft Punk, Cascada, DJ Sammy, Modjo, Ian van Dahl, Iio, etc. in with their regular playlists for years. In the earlier 90's, I interned for Toby Amies when he was programming KRQ (during the time that Jimmy Kimmel was doing mornings) and we had a show on Sunday nights from 9-midnight that would play just about anything alternative and dance (Sunscreem, Moby, Fortran 5, Utah Saints, etc.) - I loved it. KRQ never played freestyle in regular rotation like Power 92 did, but you could hear it on Power 1490.
