AMERICAS FUNNIEST STOCK CAR COVERAGE

Last spring I was lit up on this board when I predicted ESPN/ABC would somehow screw over the NASCAR coverage over by somehow, someway bolloxing up their coverage of NASCAR.

Well, what do ya'll in the East and Central time zones think of it now?

Next to the last race of the season...a season they had been slamming down our throats for months....not to mention advertisers...and they cut away from a delayed race for ...for ..Americas Funniest Home Videos????

To quote Chris Berman "Are you KIDDING me?!"

Gee..which might have gotten more viewers..opposite the late CBS NFL game and NBC's Football night in America?

yeah...another hour full of objects thrown at peoples crotches, and set up shots so goobers with video cameras can humiliate themselves and others in an attempt to get their 15 minutes of fame....60 minutes it ain't.

No, this is NOT about an alternative to sports programming. Its about commitment to fans and advertisers.

Wonder what will happen next week in the penultimate race, where a Champion is declared, should there be rain in South Florida?

Well I guess Fox can be happy now that another network has screwed NASCAR worse than they did with their now-you-see-it-now-you-don't rain delay incident with the Yankees-Red Sox earlier this year.

I mean, the whole bumping the baseball game over to FX because of the contract with NASCAR deal works for me on some level because it's about sports, but to bump the ending of a sporting event because of "commitments" (I believe that's the word they used) to a taped entertainment program?

How did NASCAR ever agree to that provision in a contract with ABC/ESPN to begin with? Particularly since I think ABC is only taking the 10 races of the Chase to the Championship, arguably the most important races of the year.

If someone can invent a device that automatically will flip your DVR recording over to the 'new' channel when these kinds of changes take place, I'll buy three of them! Anything to avoid the rage I felt watching my recording at about 930 last night and hearing the announcers say 'we'll be switching over to ESPN at 730 (or whatever time it was)...'

I'm only guessing here but maybe, jus' meebee, NAPCAR never considered the race, one of the shortest on the circuit, would last anywhere as long as it did.

Rain in the desert? Yup. Who wouldda thunk it?

Lots of yellows? Yup again. Dang all those 'objects' on the track.

Of course, ESPN....er, ABC could have started the race at 1PM local (3ET) and been done (1) before it got dark, and (2) before the 'commitment' to cut over to AFHV's. Instead they fluffed over an hour of "pre-race" BS and suffered the consequences. Disney sure screwed the pooch when it combined ESPN with ABC.

Even though I live in Phoenix and have attended many races out at PIR (none since '89 tho') watching 43 NAPCARS on that little track is almost as bad as Bristol (or any other tennis match). It did give me a good excuse to read a book while waiting for the "big one" (which, unfortunately happened only a few laps from the end). I just hate it when that happens!

Somehow, I suddenly lost all interest in NASCAR about 15 years ago...right around the time TV declared it the new 'national pastime'. Strangely, everything that made the sport less appealing to me, made it more appealing to everybody else.

Racing analyst Kerry Murphey has a full rant article on the decision, as well as comments by NASCAR drivers:

Excerpts:
"ABC is moving coverage of NASCAR’s second to last race of the year with about 39 laps to go, for a taped show that no one cares about and can be seen anytime online or reruns? This is the equivalent to leaving baseball’s NLCS/ALCS playoff game to watch Knight Rider...

Essentially NASCAR has enjoyed flag-to-flag coverage since 1979, and in one swoop the sport has been knocked backwards 30 years..."

I don't agree with what ABC did, but in all the indignation, you forgot one very important excerpt from the article:

NASCAR’s TV ratings for the Texas race was 5.89 million viewers and America’s Funniest Home Videos by was ranked 42nd in the latest Nielsen Ratings with 7.8 million viewers.

A 15-year-old clipshow rerun draws 33% more viewers than a live sporting event. That is the shame of NASCAR.

Here is the bottom line...

ABC had run all of it's advertisements for the NASCAR race, so they got their money there. They were not making any more money by continuing the broadcast. Why not shift it to a second tier cable network to get the advertising money from a crap show like AFV. It all comes down to the money, and when Mickey gets those dollar signs in his eyes...

Then again, who can't laugh at a guy who is getting hit in his nuggets. lol.

Although I'm not a NASCAR fan, it looks like to me that they could have a requirement in the contract that ABC had to carry the entire race. You can bet that Major League Baseball, the NFL, or the NBA wouldn't let them pull anything like this.
