Amor 93.1 playing DANCE?

A member had alerted me to this.

Upon browsing the radio dial and ending up at 93.1 (WPAT - Amor 93.1), he heard Alexandra Stan's "Mr. Saxobeat". I tuned in later and heard some Spanish rap with "We No Speak Americano" in the background.

I'm pleasantly surprised by this because I would have thought that La Mega or X 96.3 would have played dance. I've never tuned in to Amor 93.1 but I always thought of it as a Spanish Lite FM sticking to ballads/romantic songs....never songs with a beat. :)

it looks like its now a latin pop station now, also la mega is also playing Alexandra Stan's "Mr. Saxobeat"

The song you talked about is Pitbull's "Bon Bon." Certainly not an AC song.

This is the kind of thing that Mega and X are known. I mean, in the days of Hot AC, songs with beat will make it into the playlist, but "Bon Bon's" lyrics aren't exactly soccer mom friendly. Definitely typical of reggaetón/ Latin Hip-Hop.

We have a similar station in Puerto Rico, Fidelity 95.7. They play "We no Speak Americano", as well as stuff by Lady Gaga and the Black Eyed Peas. But you don't see Pitbull unless he's featured alongside Enrique Iglesias or Usher... and it's always in English.

[EDIT: I just remembered that Pitbull is not the only Latin artist to use "Americano" as a background. I can't remember the exact rappers who did it, though. Again, not AC friendly.]

There's never been much of a difference between AC and pop stations in Spanish except in the first years of reggaetón. Now, with reggaetón mellowing and going mass appeal, it's natural that stations take a more pop sounding lean. PAT was always on the soft side of AC, so that makes the change to mainstream more obvious.

I guess I don't know what an AC song is, but here's an example:

KLVE was, in the 1995-2000 period, a classic soft AC. Yet for months it played Carlos Vives' La Gota Fría as a power. Was that an AC song? Some would say it is not. But did the AC listeners like it? Yep. KLVE also played Gasolina when that was a crossover hit.

Some songs don't "fit" but they "belong."

WPAT used to play until recently some interesting songs that had distinctly local indigenous flavors from various South and Central American countries. Now their music sounds like more generic Latin pop.
Clear Channel's Mia format, heard locally on WWPR HD2, seems quite similar, but perhaps airs a bit more reggaeton. Mia seems to play Shakira several times an hour.

They are all over the place, no wonder the numbers are horrible. At times you would think it's a talk station too

How can the numbers be horrible if the changes were just made a few weeks ago?

Yes, because Mega and X have no talk whatsoever, especially during the mornings... ::)

Maybe Amor should change it's moniker to Ritmo. This is what they played this morning:

That playlist looks a lot like Fidelity's in Puerto Rico. I've never heard that particular song by Daddy Yankee or Chino y Nacho. But this one by Wisin y Yandel I think I have.

Sometimes I think Fidelity sounds more like WKAQ than what most people would call its competitor, WIOA. And really, that's happening in AC radio, Spanish and English. They're not that Lite anymore. Both Amor and Fidelity look more like Hot AC station than AC stations.

Fidelity has considered itself Hot AC since I was first involved with it in about 1982. It has never considered Estereotempo its direct competitor (Estereotempo has not been anyone's competitor for about 10 years). Fidelity, when it played more English language music, positioned itself as being more upscale. As the interest in English died in PR, it became personality pop, not AC.
