AMP 103.3 is flipping at 10am on 5/28

Based on the 6+ numbers for June, it doesn't appear that the ODS/BGB experiment is off to a strong start. What is the over/under for how long Entercom sticks with this format? I realize they launched during extraordinary circumstances, but it feels like a placeholder until they can figure out something better (and their potential revenue will support the investment in a brand which requires more resources to operate).

Nobody is going to use the 6+ share (not rating or AQH persons) data for any decision, even outside the pandemic period. But right now, it's obvious that they had a long-term plan and believe the format is viable. They won't make decisions until the virus and the economy come under control. And that may not be until next year.

i don't know how many of you are local, but they have some digital billboards around eastern MA. They wouldn't invest in those for a temporary format

iHeart invested in billboard advertising for the EDM format on 101.7 that turned out to be a placeholder while The Bull country format was being readied.

that's a good point. was that still under Clear Channel though? They would have had owned Clear Channel Outdoors, which was their billboard division. forgive me if my timeline is off

Yes, it was. Clear Channel purchased it from the Phoenix, which was alt-rock WFNX. CC's first format after a few days of automated WFNX music was Adult Hits WHBA "The Harbor", then EDM as WEDX, then country WBWL "The Bull".

Iheart had some billboards for 101.7 the Habor which was an automated placeholder just like Big.

Wasn't that back when Clear Channel owned a major billboard company?

I am just a little bit baffled as to why people think that Big 103 is only temporary. Can somebody 3xplain the reasons why some of you think this?

Some of it may be just wishful thinkers hoping that the "permanent" format will be smooth jazz, AAA, active rock, oldies, classic country or some other personal favorite.

I agree. iHeart is thrilled that it has an outlet in one of country music's most important markets. There is no threat that The Bull will change anytime soon.

They don't own this station for ratings, but for reach. They have several other stations in Boston they own for ratings.

This is a company that owns three stations in the Top 5. No other company can make that claim.

I think the station being referred to as the "placeholder" by the original poster is WBGB, the former WODS, not WBWL, the former WFNX/WHBA/WEDX. The latter station got dragged into the thread when the question of billboard advertising came up.

Whoops yes you're right, although some past posters have wondered about The Bull.

Usually those who don't get why it isn't a classic country station with its own niche instead of nibbling at WKLB's audience. It took me, as a non-radio person, a while to understand why chains don't "go for it" with every station they own in a given market, but I see now how classic country would be a hard sell in a market that really didn't warm to country until the 2000s and all those other "if only everyone else liked the music I do" formats wouldn't supply the demographics iHeart is seeking with The Bull.

Big has done well for Entercom.Other markets for the company may follow suit, maybe tomorrow.

Radioinsight tweet:"If the rumor mill is to be believed, tomorrow has a chance to be just as “BIG” with major market format changes."

Replacing it with AAA or Smooth Jazz would be cool. Something different for a change. But I see iHeart flipping WKAF 97.7 before I can see entercom flipping WBGB if indeed it's a placeholder format
