AMP begins changing 102.3 fm New Carlisle

Well, AMP has started changing 102.3 FM from being a simulcast of 97.7 to something else. They have been stunting "Islands in the Stream' by Kenny Rogers/Dolly Pardon over and over. I am not sure what the song implies. When I spoke to AMP, they said the new format will begin Monday. I have yet to hear any call letters mentioned either. Any ideas????/

Bob FM, Classic Country, or a move of Love Songs from 1620 AM back to 102.3??

Soft AC?

That's a strange song to stunt with! It fits in lots of formats. I guess they want to keep us guessing ;)

If its anything that fits the AMP MO, look for it to be broadcasting from the bird and poorly owned.

But saying that, rumor has it Bob has been knocking on the door and no one has let him in yet. Art does read these boards, so once he sees that...he might just flip it to Waitt Polka (j/k)

I wonder how long whatever it is will last ... A year? Two?

102.3 FM's Callsign History

you think after a while, the FCC would want to lock this crazy insane person up! Just because his terrible use of call letters alone!

Well, regardless of format and call selected...it is pure genius changing just before the Spring diaries get sent out. That way, when the results come back plenty of excuses can be made. You know, like, "Well, we started 'All Lost Dog Reports, All The Time' a couple weeks before the rating period started...that's why we don't have any numbers yet."

Then you have the..."Well, the diaries didn't get our correct call letters printed in them before they were sent out so the numbers don't mean anything...but it's a good format, don't you think...and you should spend some money advertising on WDOG - 102.3."

And it goes on and on.

I've been listening to this market for 30+ years. Way beyond "non-compelling." You wonder whose running the show.

And AMP is not unique in that respect, either. Plenty of other 'high class operations' that pull the same stuff.

There is something AMP could do that would be VERY smart. I'll give 'em credit on this board Monday if they do what I think they should.

In the meantime, I'm enjoying the sounds of Kenny & Dolly. Quite a pair. Kenny sings well, too.

If it is a decent format they'll grab people until the newness wears off and people go back to their ruts. The excuses will still be there, but I don't expect a total ratings tank (unless the next format isn't worth letting the newness wear off).

From my previous post, "...it is pure genius changing just before the Spring diaries get sent out.

I apologize to the board. I should have done the math and figured out that the diaries have already been sent out!!

As of 7:30AM today...they are playing around. Toggling between "Islands" and simulcasting 97-7.

I'm already bored waiting for them to make the change.

Lets see, its an Artistic station. First thought is its going to be terrible no matter what they do. Second thought, they are going to screw up a perfectly good signal. Third, well all they know how to do is poorly execute formats and screw up perfectly good signals...so there really is no third.

Poor South Bend, I feel for ya!

What the hell did it flip too?

Well, kinda...My signal is horrible in the house, but I heard one top hour, and it said (paraphrasing) "Today's Best Music, and yesterday's favorites, We are WZOW New Carlisle, 102.3 "The Stream" Pretty sure it's on the bird, or at least was when I was listening around 6 PM today. I guess it's gonna try to knock down Sunny to help out U93's ratings. A bit curious about the "Today's best music" liner......Its soft AC, as far as I can tell...

'102.3 - The Stream' - huh?? Well. 1st off, the VERY smart move that AMP could have made wasn't this format. Never-the-less, it looks like they want to take on 'Sunny'. As well someone should! Sunny 101.5 needs (and this market needs) some good competition. 'Sunny' has won their numbers by default. Sad-to-say, AMP doesn't have the signal on 102.3 nor the deep pockets to go up against 'Sunny' (but it will be interesting to see how this will play out). I suspect that AMP will pick up a couple of shares but won't be a serious contender. On the other hand...listeners might be sooo tired of 'Sunny' that they'll give 102.3 a chance. Wonder how 102.3 penetrates all the metal office structures. One of 'The Stream's' positioning statements says something to the effect that "they're your work day station". If you can't receive the signal all bets are off. That being stated, the satellite feed keeps their overhead minimum so they might even make a couple $$ doing this if their demo can pick up the signal. Minimum investment yields minimum return. Chinese fortune cookie saying.

As a nit-picky side note, South Bend was established along the south "shore" of the St. Joseph River where the river turns north and heads up into Michigan and eventual Lake Michigan. You'd think that maybe...just maybe...a station might brand itself as "The River". No famous streams around here. Probably not going to be a famous stream that happens to be a radio station either after this next AMP run.

That's my view from this crow's nest.

Im not so big on the name either. However, It may take a notch away from Sunny. The thing I see is that South Bend's ratings are dependent on Saint Joe County. This is going to become more of a Niles thing, or so I persume.

Sunny will feel some effect, but isnt the Stream ran completely on Waitt Radio Networks?

Yeah, its totally automated. Art says he "wants to get live people in there soon, but considering they have maybe 5 jocks in that whole building, Im not holding my breath.

The Stream....not so good a moniker. A stream can mean anything. From a stream of automated radio to a stream of sewage.

But to have the police show up? Now THAT'S classic!

I heard stations stunting with repeated plays of "California Dreamin'" Mamas & Papas to "Brass In Pocket" Pretenders (for what I'm still guessing.) But NEVER for this long...and for "Islands In The Stream" as well.

Reminds me of that old radio joke of "Islands In The Stream" (Dolly Parton backstroking...)

Cheers!

Perhaps better stated as the south BEND of the river? :)
From South Bend the river travels upstream east through Elkhart then northeast into Michigan and generally east from there. South Bend is the southernmost part of the river. The settlement was started in 1820 when Pierre Navarre built a cabin on the North side of the Joseph river. So to be nit-picky ... not the south shore as you stated. :D

You'd think that maybe...just maybe...a station might brand itself as "The River".

Although the major city (once entirely in the Michigan Territory until Indiana became a state and moved the line to gain the port on Lake Michigan) is named after the South Bend of the river it really doesn't play that big of a role in people's lives. They do fish people out of it on a regular basis who have fallen off of the bridges down town or have otherwise entered the water. That is a lovely image for a radio station!

Certainly is ... with the amount of automation today I can't imagine who would call them. Back in the day when radio was live operated or at least live maintained (pre 1995) if something odd was going on at a station uncorrected there probably was a problem with the person who was there ... closer to the end of that era that person was probably just overwhelmed running multiple station automation ... but day shifts could be trusted to have someone listening and fixing. Nowadays the station is more likely to be empty.
