Amp gets new calls

I thought AMP was going to stay with the KLSX call letters! It did with the entire FM Talk format but oh well, does it really matter?

David E. will tell you no, it does not matter, especially in a PPM world. I'm sure he is right, but the sentimentalist in me wishes he wasn't.

Likely the main reason fro the change has to do with how the station appears in Arbitron reports... easier for time buyers to ID the station now.

It's gonna feel weird not hearing the KLSX calls anymore...although it was kind of depressing hearing them without the talk format associated with them...

Huh??

The KLSX calls came with the change in format to Classic Rock circa 1986. They were supposed to phonetically spell "Classics". The talk format that came later never bothered to change them. I thought that this was a fallback move in the beginning in case the move to talk didn't work out, they could always go back to classic rock. After all, do you want to bet your station on Kato Kaelin, Susan Olson, and Rikki Rachtman? Didn't think so. But the Howard phenomenon took over and after that there was no looking back. But by then, they must have realized the KLSX calls were no burden to the station, and they persisted.

I know about the whole classic rock format, I wasn't born yet, I just associate the KLSX calls with the talk format - even though it had nothing to do with the talk format. Plus, I think KLSX are the coolest call letters ever - KPWR comes a close second...

You want cool call letters? I think the best was KZAP, an AOR station in Sacramento. We had a cheshire cat for our logo.
Nice calls there, I like it K-ZAP! It just seems as if any think with an X in it is cool, such as WXRK (I forgot to mention this in my last post). Excuse me for sounding like a teenager for a second when I say, if someone came out with the call letters "KXTC" or "WEED", I would laugh...

I was amused when the University of North Texas at Denton filed for its initials.

And then Gordon McLendon's KTSA in San Antonio decided to honor the area's many military bases by changing to KAKI, for the uniform color of many servicemen. Nice, but the huge Hispanic population thought it was "caca" and they reverted to KTSA.

Radio-Info.com still list 97.1 as KLSX. No change there. How are they IDing at the TOH?
it still has that annoying hi-pitch voice saying "MY FAVORITE STATION!" then its says KAMP

I wonder if East Coast sister NOW is going to change their call letters from WXRK again
WNOW FM is already a Regional Mexican station in North Carolina...
WNWF is still available though! (WN(o)WF(m)

I believe that K-AMP is the way to go! As David said, it is not so much for the listeners, but for time buyer advertisers.
