Amplified Car Antenna - HELP

So about 6 months ago, I got cute and decided to take off tint off the back of my window (2009 CIVIC SI) and scraped some of the Antenna off that is in the back window. So - After a few cheap amplified antenna's you hide, I determined I needed to get an external antenna built into the car. So, I purchased the METRA 44-UA46 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FMS5LVI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1.

The antenna works like a charm HOWEVER over the holiday, I had to do some traveling. What I noticed is that if I go under power lines or if I go around any towers, I get nothing but interference on stations that are well within the 60 dbu contour range. When I would pass through downtown districts, Atlanta and Nashville as examples, I would lose nearly all stations. However, I could still pull stations out as far as I would normally pull them provided no interference from towers are surrounding. So is there a filter of some sort I can put on the back of my stock stereo that would kill the interference I pick up around towers? Hell, I think I'm pulling interference on my FM dial when I pass in front of AM towers. Also I get some interference around semis if they are using their CB radio. Not cool. Any help would be appreciated.

The preamp in the antenna is being overloaded by the strong, nearby signals.
Replace the antenna with one which is not amplified.
The overload is within the antenna. A filter on the output will do no good.

Couple questions on that:

1- Would a non-amplified antenna reduce the ability to pick up fringe stations?

2- When you say replace the antenna, would the rubber part be adequate or is the amplification part in the actual cable. I ask because I'm trying to avoid replacing the entire antenna where it's been built into the car. We are playing with holes here. LOL!

I don't know whether the preamp is within the antenna. If the two power wires go into the antenna, the preamp is internal, within the antenna.
Your radio should be sensitive enough to receive the fringe stations without a preamp.
