Amy Brooks on WBCN

> Are they trying to kill this station? First DLR, now they

And the problem with that is?

A pro can adapt to most any format, if they really try. Who knows, Magic does not allow much room for 'personality,' but Amy did work for years at BOS, middays and AM drive. And with both of the those stations and formats, jocks really didn't have a chance to show what kind of radio she is really capable of doing. She may just surprise us, deep down inside, she just may be really wild.
What shift is she doing?

well with rob reuter not on their website anymore...i'm sure they had to add a personality, plus, what's the big deal? jocks change formats all the time

Change of formats, no big deal. You work at Magic, you drink tea. You work at 'BCN it's Coca-Cola. Jam'n is Code Red. Kiss is Mountain Dew. 'AAF is Red Bull. Mike FM is YooHoo.

I was actually pretty surprised to see that too but not because of who she is rather that is one thing that usually does not happen in Boston as readily as say New York, jocks jump formats here much more readily than there. There is definately a small mindset there whereas if you do one thing you're seen as only capable of that one thing whereas markets like New York and LA jocks are seen as known commodities who are adaptable. Amy has a GREAT, GREAT, set of pipes, and although she may have come off as a volvo driving soccer mom on BOS that is also what that station is about and what she was paid to do. SO if she can adapt she could be an asset to the station.

I wish her luck at BCN!!!!

Amen to that. I've always been a big fan of Amy Brooks (still don't know why BOS let her go). I never thought of her as a Magic-type...I imagine her fitting in much better at BCN.

But nobody has answered the question yet...what shift is she doing on BCN?

isn't she married to a guy from nullset(formerly known as gangsta bitch barbie).
n/s used to get heavy spins on wbcn. i wonder if the hubby pulled some strings.
it's not who you know, it's who you married to.

Poor CBS. Roth has been a nightmare. Rumors of FreeFM General Manager Tom Chiasano having lunch with Jackie "Jokeland" Martling leads me to believe that he may be looking to hire him back to write jokes for DLR's show. I've also heard that Roth has been refusing to read Live commercials. This has led to a stalemate with Chiasano. Roth has also been seen carrying out the Palm trees that were placed in the studio for him. Apparently he hasn't been totally happy with the rooms design. Things sure don't sound like they are going very well over there. The problems have just begun. I give it 6 more months tops before Roth is thrown out of the Building. Of course that's only if he doesn't end up quitting on his own first.

I have to stop and say this:

I do not know Ms. Brooks, have never met her, I have heard her on air many many times. To suggest that anyone may have pulled some strings is insulting on so many levels. In fairness Nullset/gangsta bitch Barbie as good as they are never got much play on BCN, if at all it was under previous management which has zero influence (for better or worse) on the current WBCN situation. Even if they had been played in heavy rotation, to suggest that an obviously competent air talent like Amy would only be there because of who she happens to be married to, well it devalues us all. She's a pro, anything she gets there now she got on her own merits, end of story. Was she a smart hire? that remains to be seen but that outcome will be tied to her abilities and whether she can sell rock formatics, not whose wifey she is.

Are you saying all hires are based strictly on ability and not who you know? You can't be serious!
I agree though that nepotism probably had little to do with it here...I've never heard of this band, but I doubt any station would hire a jock just because they were married to a musician...especially a member of a band that's not exactly a household name.

Of course not Bob as long as there has been employment there has also been nepotism and in our business there has always been a good amount of croanie-ism. However when you're talking about someone who has worked full time in the market for some time while they may not be a marquee name per se, she's got a more solid track record than someone who none of us had ever heard of who just happened to be married to someone in a band which was in good stead with the station. I would also think that most women radio professionals who would be reading this board might take particular offense to the suggestion that she might have gotten a gig there becuase of who she was married to. Somehow in my mind it would not seem quite as offensive if you were to have suggested that I as a man had been hired somewhere becaure my wife was in good with a station, I think that is something that many women tend to be particularly sensitive about being accused of. Either way she walked into WBCN with more experience than most of the part timers, one of the things that has made WBCN very unique is that for a giant station many of the jocks there have only worked at one station, WBCN which is pretty hard to imagine but oedipus tended to bring alot of folks in from college radio (WMBR) when he was at the helm and many of them have remained there.

What shift? Time?

Have always loved her voice, would love to hear her.

There were a number of WMBR jocks brought in by Oedipus over the years, but none from WMBR are still at WBCN anymore.

To name a few...

Carter Alan was shifted to WZLX in the mid-90's.

Albert O. is now at Greater Media overnights on WROR.

Tami Heide is on KROQ in Los Angeles.

Peter Choyce is doing college radio in Los Angeles.

I know there were others who went (WTBS)/WMBR ->WBCN, but I'm too tired to think of any more right now.

Here, Here!!!

I couldn't have said it better myself....Here,Here!

I bet that is what KISS 108 people said when they hired Matt Seigel for their morning show. WHAT? KISS hired some rocker from WBCN who admittedly hates our music format??? Toejammer, they screamed that, what, 25 years ago before Matt turned KISS 108's mornign show into a local powerhouse morning show?

So Amy brooks is now BCN's savior? Get a grip. The woman might have a great voice, but presents no personality on the air whatsoever.

BCN needs an injection of life. The format is dead and there are virtually no new artists to do it. The station needs personality. I heard Amy on Saturday. I will not be tuning in just for her or DLR. If this is the best Dave Wellington can do to help his dying station then I hope he enjoys his last winter in Boston.

So, did YOU submit an aircheck?

You know thats exactly the first thing that pops into my head when someone goes on a tangent like that on this board. "just another jealous person who thinks everyone in radio stinks and they should get the job" Really it makes you sound childish. Instead of just saying "X is boring" give us an example, try to make your opinion sound thought out.

Actually Tami has been gone from KROQ for over a year almost two, and there are still jocks there whose first time on air has been and still is WBCN. Bradley Jay is the only MBR guy that comes to mind who is still around, so in that sense you are correct.

You want examples? Then you obviously never listened to her on WBOS. Long rambling breaks that went nowhere. But then again, WBOS continues to be the most boring station in Boston. Better yet, give me an example of when she ever compelling?

Bottom line is Amy is an announcer - not a personality. All I'm saying is that BCN is in need of personality.

And as far as this lunacy that I am jealous and did I submit a demo? Why submit a demo to a station that is about to go down in flames and has gotten rid of any one and anything that made the station listenable? In the last two years, BCN has eliminated, Nik, Deek, Melissa, Howard Stern, Nocturnal Emissions and completely ruined the pre and post game shows for the Patriots. And what I hear in place of what was there before is a poor imitation of what was once a great rock station, with strong ties to the artists and DJ's who had personality.

Face it. Infinity/CBS Radio ruined WNEW and they are doing the same thing in this town too. Amy Brooks is not the cause of the problems but is just another case of how bad the station has become in the last three years. They used to be my favorite station. Now they make me cringe.
