Amy Grant Leaves Word, Joins Sparrow

After 30 years with Word Records, Christian music pioneer Amy Grant has left the roster, signing a deal with EMI Christian Music Group's Sparrow label that will include her catalog as well as new music.

"We are certainly honored by Amy's confidence in us to carry on her musical legacy," says Bill Hearn, president/CEO EMI Christian Music Group. "It certainly is a historical moment for EMI."

Grant signed with Word in October 1976, one month shy of her 16th birthday. "I had a great run with Word and still love the people there," Grant tells Billboard, "but I feel like EMI is uniquely outfitted to do great things for the catalog. And I've known Bill Hearn and his father for over 25 years. There's a comfort level there."

I am surprised that she is leaving Word. Also, I thought that A&M owned the masters to her later albums including Heart In Motion. Maybe this is a fresh start for her.

Amy started out with Word's Myrrh label around 1978 or so. Her A&M releases (I think)were owned by Word Inc. leased to A&M at the time.

If memory serves me right, Heart In Motion was copyrighted by A&M.

it was on the secular side. it was also on a seperate christian label. same with unguarded.

But I believe that Unguarded was Copyrighted under Word though. There may have been a duel copyright with Heart In Motion and later.

didnt unguarded have her first top 40 hit on it? if so it was released thru A&M.

edit just checked. love will find a way was her first top 40 hit. and was on A&M.

Maybe you are misunderstanding what I am saying. While her first single was on A&M, the reocrd says 1985 Word Inc. in the copyright. While Heart In Motion says 1991 A&M on it instead.

Ok, I got the 45 RPM right in front of me as I type. I am half correct, while it says Copyright 1985 A&M, it also says "P" 1985 Word Records. I believe that Heart In Motion and later is missing the later information.

Ok, now I have a copy of House of Love right in front of me, and labeled on the cassette is "P" and "C" A&M records. Not Word as Find A Way is labeled.

ok here is what i am saying. amy grant and russ taff btw were on word/ A&M. secular distribution was thru A&M. christian distribution was thru word. same with the christian metal band barren cross. christian distribution was thru benson. secuar sistribution was thru enigma. and the secular version had a 2 bonus tracks and did not have the ballad that the benson release had called your love gives. the new release out now on rhino has all the songs on it.

ps i remember the church community getting all upset over the amy on A&M deal. because A&M was secular and christians were not suppose to have anything to do with the world. this was a long time before baby baby which totally made the same people flip out

Yes I remember that too. Also the prospect that the list price at the time for Unguarded in Christian Book Stores was $8.98 but you could get it on sale at a secular record store for $5.99 as well.

I still thought that A&M owned the masters for Heart In Motion and House of Love though, and not Word. I guess Amy Grant must have owned them herself instead. I am sure that A&M still owns the remixes though.
