Amy Winehouse (1983-2011)

Agreed, and the comparison to MJ is weak. I honestly don't remember playing any of her songs except maybe Rehab as a novelty track. The lyrics to that song tell it all. She wanted to die (I don't believe that was the case with MJ). Frankly, I never thought of her music as Dance either. I saw a post where David Guetta compared her to Janis Joplin, implying that an artist dying at 27 from a drug overdose automatically puts you in that category with Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison. But here's the catch...your name has to start with a J (unlike Kurt GoBang) and you have to be a legend.

Michael Jackson also had his share of personal problems, just like Amy Winehouse. But music can be separate from a person. Chris Brown hit Rihanna many times yet his songs are still hits.

I only heard Rehab once or twice...
I long ago added "Me and Mr. Jones" to my station playlist, I think it's a great song, if a bit rough in language.
When I first heard it, I knew it was a great original song, ...but thought she sounded like someone out of control,
and this development does not shock me.

It is too bad that artists often create works inspired by their private demons but cannot survive in the face of them.

The difference between Amy Winehouse and Michael Jackson is that MJ had racked up years' worth of hits, and had thus built up years' worth of goodwill with his fans that, for better or worse, sustained him through his trial. Winehouse, meanwhile, basically came onto the scene already having drug and alcohol problems, and had not (previously) made any "deposits" into the "bank" from which she could "withdraw." Long story short, she will always be more known (if she is even remembered at all!) for her drug and alcohol problems than for her "music," if you could even call it "music."
