An 80's Song On "True Oldies"

Right now, WPRV is playing Huey Lewis and the News' "Hip To Be Square". You might remember it from "Fore", their most accomplished album. The song is so catchy, most people don't pay attention to the lyrics, but they should...

Anyway, this song is being played on a station that prides itself on playing "no 80's music", according to TrueOldiesChannel.com. Since this is Bruce Palmer's airshift, I wonder if he gets to pick his own music.

Huey Lewis is true oldies now? Bullsh*t. Great song and everything, but for a station to push themselves off as being True Oldies and to play Huey Lewis is truly a joke. I don't want to sound like a commercial because I realize that I've mentioned Sirius Satellite radio here for the past few days. However with them you get a true oldies channel. Sirius GOLD won't play anything past 1963. Now THAT is true oldies!

I brought this subject up a couple of weeks ago when the national feed played two in a row from John Couger Melloncamp on a twin spin weekend.

I thought the original plan for Scott Shannon's True oldies was supposed to be 50's,60's and early 70's.From what I gather when it debut a couple of years ago it was that an alternative to the now "Classic Hit's"stations that were former oldies stations.

Over the past few months as affiliates are being added at an alarming rate the trend has moved to the late 70's to an occasional early 80's.

I guess the real "oldies" play list needed to be tweaked to include late 70's and early 80's to make the sale when it comes to bring in revenue and 50's and 60's alone was not cutting it.
Remember its all about the money.Chubby Checker and Dion and the Belmonts sad to say are a thing of the past.

Since I last posted this less than an hour ago I have heard Stray cat strut,Will you still love me tommarow by Chicago on True oldies.I know its local right now and maybe they are going for the Bee's audience. I just learned Bo Diddly died too.

I can't believe the ridiculous playlist on this station. I heard a Restless Heart song played the other day. I had to look at my dial to make sure it was on 790. Right now nobody is playing 50's and early 60's music and nobody is playing classic country. Those are two untapped markets, small as they may be. The way 790 is now is a total waste of the frequency. If they are not going to go with one of the two formats I mentioned, they may as well do syndicated talk or ESPN. Ron St.Pierre, wake up !

If you check the true oldies channel website and look at the playlist none of these 80s songs are on it so they are obviously being popped in locally.

I thought so. I wouldn't think Scott Shannon would play "Authority Song" (now playing on 790)...

Someone please define what an "Oldie" is as back in the 80's-90's it was songs from the 50's and 60's (about 20-30 years old)....at this point, songs from the 80's are getting to that age....

After reading this thread yesterday, I finally got a chance to listen to true oldies 790 when I got home from work (earlier than usual).
From what I'd read here, I expcted an 80s-fest.

But, I listened (on-line) from a little after 2 until the (yuck) Yankees came on and didn't hear a single 80s song the whole time ??
Personally, I thought it sounded exactly as I expected "true oldies" to be...lots of 60s, mostly mid-to-ealier 70s (though there were a few later 70s songs) and scattered 50s tunes from Paul Anka, Chuck Berry, a Fats Domino cut..and even "Mr. Lee" (50s..but I forget who did it). Plenty of non-standard ("unsafe") cuts, too..which made for greater un-predictability (I like that on the radio)

I thought it sounded alot like B101 of 15+ years ago which is back when I liked that station.
A shame it has to suffer the quality ills of AM on a radio..but on-line it all sounded a-okay.

I've tabbed it under "favorites" on my computer.
