An alternative to 106.9 FREE FM

I'm in agreement with those who have said that 106.9 is horrible. For me, there isn't one show on the station that could be considered funny or entertaining. Strict topical radio is just boring, and with the exception of Corolla, all the shows follow this style.

For this reason, if you are like me and want to laugh and be entertained by the magic box, might I suggest The Don and Mike Show. They are on M-F 12n - 4pm on AM 1140. The station is out of Sacramento but it's a flamethrower. The signal can be heard strongly over most of the Bay Area. There is also a stream of their show at: www.donandmikewebsite.com

Based out of Washington DC, Don and Mike are TALENTED radio performers, do a great entertaining show and, even though they target the male 25-54 set, they have appeal for the women out there too. They never take themselves too seriously and are great for inside radio people to listen to.

It's amazing to me that even though they are already syndicated (mostly in mid-sized and small markets), that the brainiacs at CBS New York have not given them one clear on ANY of the new FREE FM stations that have popped up around the country. The time that they are on, (3p-7p EST) makes it difficult to get clears on the west coast, but they have a long-running (20 years), successful show, so why haven't they been given a shot? D&M have been given chances (if that's what you want to call them) in Philadelphia and New York in the past, had decent numbers, but were dumped in favor of a box of CDs.

CBS Radio not using one of its most successful shows proves that there are idiots running the ship in New York. I bet they wish they had Mel K. back now.

Just my opinion, but I think they should be on 106.9. They would be the one thing that would make the station tolerable.

As a card-carrying Little Brain (a/k/a "Ass Hat"), I'll second that. I can't believe that the CBS braintrust didn't pop The Radio Gods into a few more markets at the start of the year to complement Carolla on the West Coast. Donaldo y Miguel (and Buzz and Robbay) are a lot of fun.

Of course, it's a great idea. So there's no logical reason to do it.

(Oh, and KHTK/1140 comes in like a local in the Eastbay. Check 'em out noon to 4 p.m. They're doing a "Best Of" this week, but that'll give you a day to pick up on all the in-phrases.)

Ejecting.

My impression is that D&M did not have good numbers when they were on FM talkers in NYC and Philly. I remember some of the specific numbers I read about at the time and they were dismal. That could be the reason CBS is not putting them on any of their FREE FM stations across the country. Then again, most of their current shows probably won't do any better.

As poorly as the old WNEW did in NY with their hot talk format (they eventally had to change formats),as well as Hot Talk failures in Fresno and Austin, I am surprised that CBS has so much faith in the format that they are doing the FREE FM thing in so many markets.

Mustt be KRAK'S frequency from the 50's-60's. That came in like a blow torch day & night in San Lorenzo, where I live in my parent's house now.

It was KRAK before KHTK. I believe KRAK meant crack of the whip because it used to be a country station. Don and Mike are great but treat most of their callers like idiots. That is if you can get past that call screening bitch Joe Ardinger.

Jay F,

If I rememeber correctly, D&M had a 3.6 when they were canned off of WYSP. That is not fantastic but certainly not dismal. Considering that Opie and Anthony ran them into the ground to the Philly audience before they even signed, I think they did quite good.

As for NY, I recall them being in the top 15 for their time slot. As I am sure you know, NY has over 100 radio stations. Being in the top 15 out of over 100 radio stations is nothing to spit at. I am sure if your career had gone the way you wanted it, you would have been happy with that kind of successful at whatever it is that you do.

On the stations that have stuck with D&M, they have thrived......they have been at or near the top of the ratings/revenue in Sacramento, Baltimore, and at their home station in DC CONSISTANTLY.

If Don and Mike don't retire, they WILL BE AROUND SUCCEEDING AFTER FREE FM IS LONG GONE. If they do continue after 08, it will most likely be on sat radio. They love doing the show, but are tired of the BS that is so thick in the business.

THEY DO A COMEDY RADIO SHOW..............THEY TALK TO EVERYONE LIKE THAT. IT'S A JOKE!!!!! IF YOU CAN'T GRASP A SIMPLE CONCEPT LIKE THAT, TURN THE DIAL. DO YOU REALLY THINK THEY ARE BEING THEMSELVES ON THE RADIO??? THEY ARE PLAYING A PART.

Yes, I'm aware of that nocleverhandle with noclevercomments! I'm just mean they should show some respect to the fans who made them who they are.

I will say this again, slower just for you, THHHHEEEEYY AAAARRRRREEE PPPPLLLLAAAAYYYIIINNNGG AAAAAA PPPPAAAAARRRTTTT. I am not going to get in a p-ing contest here. If you think they should come out of character to please you and the other people who just don't get it, call them. I'm sure they will have some fun with you. Joe would DEFINITELY put you on if you told him what you think. They are back on Monday April 3.

This board started out talking about an alternative to 106.9 Free FM to a big promotion for Don & Mike's show. Personally I think they're a mediocre show. They do well in select cities, much like any syndicated show. I think the only cities they pull big numbers is DC and Sacramento. They do well in Sacramento because Sacramento has nothing.

I guess since we're promoting here, I think it's only fair I throw in my 2 cents. I'd have to say that if you want an alternative, check out The Kidd Chris Show, heard from 3-7pm ET on Philadelphia's WYSP 94.1 Free FM. They stream online and are really funny. This show started at KSFM in Sacramento, then moved to the former KXOA (when it was an FM Talker) where they worked evenings. From there they moved to San Antonio for mornings at K-Rock, and now in Philadelphia doing afternoons. You could compare this to a "dogghouse" or "Stern" kinda show. The show is original, very creative, and funny. Honestly, when you first turn it on you're gonna either really love it or hate it - but eventually it will grow on you and you will be a die hard fan.
