An Alternative to Alternative Rock

There has been speculation on this board that if Cumulus brings a rock format to New York, it may be alternative.
Perhaps another possibility would be a mainstream rocker such as The Shark, 94.3 on Long Island.
That station, which mixes classic rock with newer music has been doing well during the one year they have been on the air, according to an article in Radio Ink. With a relatively weak signal, their ratings are almost equal to heritage classic rock station WBAB. It is naturally aimed at a younger audience than the classic rock station.
Could this work in New York, and perhaps draw people who listen to Q104 by default?

I like the shark... listen to it a lot and it is, by far, the best station on Long Island. I just wish they would play music that came out in the past decade. Some of the bands they play (Green Day, Radiohead, etc.) have new music but they only play the classic hits from those bands and not the new stuff. It's unfortunate because I'd love to hear some new music. I'm starting to wonder if their hands are tied as far as format goes. What they are doing is safe but what they could do would be magnificent.

Regardless, I am pleased with the station and I hope it does well and evolves with time.

They're basically trying to do what K-Rock did when it was rebooted before it was put out of its misery. We all know how well that did. As was covered here a few times, Shark ran ads on 101.9 at the end. Rock works in the suburbs, this is not surprising and showed even when NYC proper has had a station too. At least Long Island has a choice for something. The Shark seems to have slowly tweaked a little more current of late.

I think Cumulus will swap 103.9 with 99.5 and give 103.9 to Pacifica and 99.5 will be alternative or rock. I prefer alternative rock.
