Northeast Ohio back again! This time, with a first. I always hear, and often with good clarity, AM740 "Zoomer Radio" out of Toronto, Canada. This evening, however, in the 6pm EST hour, I heard "Zoomer Radio" competing with a News/Talk station that was airing "The Sean Hannity Show". This other AM740 was coming in quite clearly as well. So, while Sean interviewed a guest about how President Obama seems to already be in campaign mode, I also heard a song by Sam Cooke with close to equal fidelity. Any idea what the Hannity show AM740 is? Is it a station that failed to go into night pattern or is it in the next time zone over, and didn't have to go just yet. I will also point out that suddenly the Hannity show 740AM disappeared.

An AM740 first

I agree. Probably KRMG. In the last few years KRMG seems to be much stronger here in Central KY at night. Toronto's AM-740 gets regularly "stepped on" here at night. That was not the case when AM-740 was CBL back about 10 years ago. I wonder if AM-740 is having issues with their Transmitter or antenna system. I believe Toronto's AM-860 (French language) uses the same tower as AM-740. The 860 frequency makes it here much better than 740 anymore.
FYI....I frequently listen to AM-740 via the Internet and have recently heard them asking for reception reports, especially in and around Toronto to try to fix "reception issues". Something must be out of whack, I'd say.

From the Chicago area, I also listen to CFZM quite a bit and find that I am tuning in more than I used to. Their signal ranges from excellent to occasionally muddy (on some radios, when it is in strongly, the fidelity is so good that it sounds almost like FM). Some nights, I also hear a news/talker in the background - coming from the southwest. My guess also is that it's KRMG - though CFZM comes in well enough to make it impossible to positively ID.
In general, CFZM seems to be getting out pretty well. What surprises me is that KRMG is blasting so far to the north and east. Perhaps it is KRMG that should be checking to make sure that their directional tx system is working as it should be.
CFZM is a great sounding station where I am. I find myself listening to them quite often. With my AM loop antenna I am able to get a decent daytime signal especially this time of year. Something about listening to CFZM on an old AM radio takes you back in time even though I wasn't alive in the golden age of AM radio. Streaming them online doesn't give you that same feeling.

They play tons of songs that were hits back in the day, but which are ignored by "classic hits" stations now. Last week I heard Joe Tex and "Show Me", week before that they played "Shoo-be-do-be-do-da-dey" from Stevie Wonder and "Nothing But A Heartache" by the Flirtations! And many others....those I remember because I have them on my iPod.
The Mid-Winter Anomaly seems early this year, topically concurrent with the Holiday music all over the dial. Even on the AM band here, there are three stations caroling already. No rest even for the weary gentlemen, I suppose.
I was stunned a few days back to hear WDJO Cincinnati atop 1480 at maybe 2:30PM, still broad daylight. The distance is something like 460 miles. That's ridiculous. Got some good audio from the reception.
At least here in the mountain places of the northeast, those signals down from the Appalachians really seem to love that cold-weather travel along that arc of hills.
