An amazing story that nobody will probably touch...

Check out this story:

http://www.philly.com/inquirer/home_top_left_story/20080130_Bidding_goodbye.html

Question: is anyone on the air in Philly talking up this story?

Has Smerconish even touched it?

Has Dom G. taken time out from from lobbing softballs at Dick Morris or defending that idiot school administrator in Virginia to take notice of such a powerful, compelling story in his own backyard?

I don't have a dog in this race. I don't know the people involved. I'm just a fan of good talk radio. This is the kind of story that can galvanize an audience - if they ever hear of it.

If Messrs. Smerconish and Girordano have seized upon the story, great - kudos to them.

You'll understand, though, if I don't give them the benefit of the doubt... :p

Jim.. HIya bud!
Given PHT's recent ratings, I think that ANY story that generates calls OTHER than bashing Bush or Hillary would be worthy of discussion. LOCAL LOCAL LOCAL. But the suits don't listen..or DO they? When I was on with Hilarie back in '97-'98 when the station first got it's new life in order, we tried local stuff and a mix of national and nonsence. Following a show about STOCKS in between Imus and us, we were DOOMED. And when THAT went away, Imus had NO ratings, thus no lead in. And WE were blamed. Ha. Why was it that when we were on WWDB-FM a couple years later, OUR show was the only thing moving UP in the ratings, while the rest of the station was tanking after they let Rush and Dr. Laura go? Does anyone know that me and Hil were going to be doing MORNINGS? Yeah..the day before Beasely dumped the talk format after 25 years, we were told that we were replacing Gil Gross and Pat Farnack...BOTH wonderful broadcasters, but the news block just wasn't gonna beat KYW back then. So, the LOCAL management told us that on Monday we'd be the new show. Lo and behold and behind the backs of local management, the Beasely Boys pulled the plug on the grand old lady DB, and put that 80's crap on. The 80's sucked IN the 80's. We all know the POINT was...NOT the point. It went away faster than Rudy's GOP lead. Jim, my point is I believe that LOCAL stories MOST of the time make a station win. Sure ya gotta talk national politics on an AM station (which generally skews male and OLD), but to get YOUNGER listeners to even SAMPLE a station like PHT, ya gotta hook 'em with stuff THEY care about...like things that happen where THEY live. Philly as we ALL know is a city of neighborhoods..and it ain't like ANY other city when it comes to its likes and dislikes. And many in Philly don't like CHANGE very much..at least by conventional thinking. WE always tried to give a local spin to virtually every story we discussed. Like you Jim, I've been doing talk for a long time now, and usually LOCAL content wins with STRONG ties to the communities it serves. We could debate this until Frank Rizzo Sr. is resurrected..but I think I'm correct. I am quite surprised that another station in town hasn't gone after PHT again. The FREE FM debacle was just too dirty and boys locker room to make it. A hip talk station on FM would force PHT to get it together or be squashed IF it is not too dirty and gets rid of the constant political talk. The Delaware Valley is big enough to support this. I think with People Meter's in our lives now, you'll see who the big boys really are in terms of cume and TSL. Make it compelling, and talk about what people REALLY talk about and ya win! RIGHT? ;)

Sorry I forgot to hit reply.........whoever started this post is correct; this is a big story on how someone so small is being picked on by someone so big. more and more people are going to the internet to sell items to make money because it's becoming harder and harder to obtain employment in the 'traditional' way. i've had an auctioneer's license since 2000 so if the law is changed it will have no effect on me (unless i decide not to pay the 200 dollar renewal fee for my license every two years). the auction business is like the radio business; very cutthroat and now that more people use the internet traditional auctioneers feel as is commissions are being 'stolen' from them. i like the idea of everyone selling that they need a bond to protect the consumer (consignor) but i feel neither bill being presented will ever fly. Read the story if you sell on the internet and let me know if you want me to become your 'buggywhipper'; my auction career is flourishing as much as my broadcating career.

Whatever happened to Miss Barsky?

I thought Hilarie was doing Good Morning America radio now, or so I read somewhere.

As much as people mock his voice, I'll give "Dr. Mazz" points for at least doing some interesting local topics on "1210 Tonight," providing a welcome respite--at times--from the relentless drumbeat of "McCain sucks!" from the syndicated hosts.

What good local talk can do--and by good local talk I don't mean the 9,345th show about Joey Vento and his silly cardboard sign--is jump between putting a local spin on national topcis like the Presidential election, and doing the shows you can't get nationally...be they funny or serious topics. I was actually sad to read we missed the chance to have Jay and Hilarie in the mornings on WWDB--THAT would have been some entertaining morning radio.
