An analysis of the Monmouth/Ocean numbers.

Congrats to Walter Sabo The Father of Modern Day Talk radio for coming up with the NJ101.5 format. A format that even with host changes and decades on the air still stands the test of time.

Didn’t want to rain on their parade yesterday but to the novice looking at the ratings it appears NJ101.5 did get good numbers in Monmouth Ocean. To most seasoned pros you can see how this happened. Send a thank you card to Greater Media who flipped the format at JRZ, no Magic for Greater Media. It was nothing that NJ101.5 did; it had more to do with mistakes by Greater Media.

Getting the numbers into the 7’s at NJ101.5 is nothing new; when Walter Sabo was there it was a very common occurrence, now it’s funny that they’re partying like it’s 1999, just look back at the numbers. The trick now for NJ101.5 is keeping the numbers in the 7’s and that’s what Walter did there for many years.

Just keep in mind this doesn’t change their reality that in the much bigger market of M/S/U NJ101.5 has falling cume in June and is being beaten IN THEIR OWN BACKYARD by New York radio stations who aren’t making dumb mistakes like Greater Media

On a positive note, Eric Scott continues to be the MVP there and Ken Matthews sounded much better than Casey yesterday. Ken without question appeals more to those prized female listeners.

MedianJ...are you familiar with the phrase "correlation does not equal causation"? WKXW's numbers had as much to do with WJRZ's fall as pissing in the ocean effects the tide. WOBM & WCHR-FM benefited from WJRZ flipping moreso than 101.5. This showing in Mon/Oc is the best 12+ that 101.5 has done in the market in 20 years. Period. End of story.

Maybe if you pry your mouth away from Walt Sabo's b@lls for a few, you might realize that it was more than 1 man that got 101.5 off the ground. We get it....you think he's the greatest thing since sliced bread. But you white knighting him and this obsession with him & 101.5 is is bit bewildering.

Radio is a business, not a hobby. And at 101.5, business is good.

All in favor of not responding to MedianJ's posts and threads anymore, please say "AYE!"

Seriously, the way he is posting now is not for discussion, it's strictly to ruffle feathers and piss people off. We know NJ101.5 is doing just fine in all of it's markets, and we know MedianJ has an axe to grind. Basically, if we ignore him, and don't reply to his maddness, he'll get bored, realize he's not getting attention, and go away.

So what do you say. Let's get the sanity back to Jersey, and not respond to MedianJ anymore?

Well, I am going to discuss the topic of this post. I am in shock that The Rat came on top out of nowhere. Then again, where else would the G-Rock fans go other than 95.9 and Shore Alternative. The Point always gets it right, and with the loss of JRZ, this allowed Millennium to tweak WOBM a bit. I did notice Hit took a slight hit, but as long as the advertisers for this market advertise with them as a Top 40 brand, they will stick around for a while. I am stunned to see The Breeze fall down hard. I remember this station dominated this market, even put up a fight with NJ 101.5, but dang. At least Thunder climbed up and is trying to fill a format hole in a way (for the Monmouth and North Jersey crowd at least.) Now as for Magic.....::). What was the point of that flip? I'm sure The Jersey Shore Shuffle gets more listeners and hits than Magic. And what happened to QXR? They are not even in the book. I thought their 96.7 stick was filling the classical void, but I guess hardly anyone is listening :/. But I cant wait for this market to start having the PPM books next year. I dont know why it wasn't PPM earlier.

In the hope of peace & harmony....AYE!

But sanity? In this state? Are YOU nuts?! :p

Please note----thunder's signal does not reach monmouth or anywhere near north jersey!!!!!The Breeze playlist has changed drastically in recent months.Press should put Thunder on 107.1 or 106.3!!!!!

They lost! The Millennium rah rah trolls trying to spin downward cume like NJ101.5's cume in M/S/U got lazy and gave up. Glad they won't respond anymore, they must have finally realized no matter how hard they try they couldn't put lipstick on downward numbers.

The Atlantic City numbers are out, where's the Millennium rah rah team now ? A few of their stations had massive dumps.

NJ101.5 cume in M/S/U is down and in Atlantic City from the fall book NJ101.5 WKXW is now down.

Huh? If I was Press or Greater Media I would review those Monmouth/Ocean diaries very carefully.

On a positive note SoJo 104.9 was up, good job by Joe Kelly.

Nowhere. Altrok 90.5 HD2 is for displaced FM106.3 fans ;)

MedianJ says Walter Sabo........and MedianJ thinks...........and MedianJ told everybody.........but MedianJ wouldn't........then MedianJ..........and of course MedianJ JUST WISHES HE COULD FIND A JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ps You can come work for me, I love self important, out of work radio people.

Mr. Tubbs - Walter Sabo is very important who heads his own media company. He's a brave visionary like the great men who started our country. Walter isn't worthless or spineless, he stood up, took a risk and invented FM talk radio when most were afraid. It wasn't an easy task but Walter pressed forward with his plans and stayed the course. Those who work at NJ101.5 should thank and honor Walter Sabo for their jobs everyday.

Walter Sabo is the father of modern day talk radio, he's earned a place in radio history.

101.5 Ratings recap, mostly down.

1. M/S/U - flat with cume down
2. Trenton - Their home town is a BIG dump down
3. Atlantic City - Big dump down
4. Sussex - Big dump down
5. Monmouth Ocean - up When PPM's come to this market look out for the big dump down. Walter can help stop these big dumps down.

Sussex County Radio is a dump. There's NOTHING THERE! WNNJ says their classic rock, they can't pick between Rock & Classic Rock and Max 106.3 is a God Awful station I miss it to the way it used to be as Max 106.3 Today's Hit Music. However, SUS is a good station (they just gotta get rid of Deliah, she's freaking too sappy and crap and she's annoying) (NO ONE'S LIFE IS LIKE DELIAH'S CALLERS! Geez what a joke! Monmouth Ocean is good. WRAT is good. Hits 106 is awesome, I LOVE them. I wish Thunder would just increase their signal same with Hit 106 and Rat 95.9. AC-joke, WAYV is NOT a CHR they fake it their HOT A/C not Adult CHR what a waste pick one! SOJO's got hot a/c covered. Wild 102.7 is really a waste you already got Kiss just bring back Alternative! Trenton- PST was great as a CHR now as Hot A/C they're a joke. Morris/Somerset/Union-DHA is great they NEED TO increase their signal. (If anyone from DHA is on here reading this, please increase your signal dramatically up into Northern Passaic, Bergen, NYC)

Compared to Sussex County, Monmouth/Ocean radio might be fantastic ... but that's it.
- You've already got a virtual clone of WRAT up there in WDHA. That doesn't come in well? WNNJ seems to be along the same lines. Maybe you can get 107.1 WWYY decent up there?
- Aside from maybe the dance mix shows, could you explain to me what sets Hit 106 apart from the dozen or so other Top 40 stations that cover all or some of the market?
- THREE Soft Rock stations here, including the absolutely abysmal, unnecessary Magic 100.1.
- I'll give you Thunder ... I think one of the local stations would be smart to give a Country format a whirl up there.
- We have a lot of format holes here: no alternative rock, no active rock, no smooth jazz, no News/Talk (NJ 101.5 is bordering on fluff with these days, save for Gearhart and Eric Scott), etc.

As for your Hot AC/CHR argument - what's the difference? AC is playing Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, even Ke$ha. Hot AC plays Kevin Rudolf, Flo Rida, Kardinal Offishall, Jason DeRulo, IYAZ, etc. All of the aforementioned acts can be heard on every local Hot AC station. Where do Hot ACs draw the line? Maybe they won't touch certain hip-hop tracks that are staples on CHR (like a "Get Low", for instance), but that's really the only difference. And the only things you'll hear on Hot AC that you won't on CHR are probably Rob Thomas and Michael Buble. A couple of years ago, there used to be a significant difference between Hot AC and CHR. Now, dare I say, they're about 90-95% similar.

This might explain the AC & Sussex ratings for 101.5

Do you see Atlantic City or much of Sussex in the circle? Well...how can a station get ratings when it doesn't reach the area? Can't bend the laws of physics for Arbitron unfortunately. Also, WPDH http://www.fcc.gov/ftp/Bureaus/MB/Databases/fm_tv_service_areas/maps/FM94519.jpg, provides some co-channel interferes in Northern NJ.

At least in (most of) Mon-Oc, you can get a decent signal from the Philly & NYC FM's. That helps a bit with some of the format holes in the area,

Be

Defensive much? So "inventing" a format (using the claim about as loosely as possible) is now equated with revolting against an oppressive government? Seriously? I'm not sure which is more comical, the notion, or the possibility that someone actually thinks that way about themself.

imhomerjay,

I think FM Talk radio existed a long time before NJ 101.5 did. 96.5 WWDB comes to mind.

Morris/Somerset/Union-DHA is great they NEED TO increase their signal. (If anyone from DHA is on here reading this, please increase your signal dramatically up into Northern Passaic, Bergen...)

Can't be done...there is a short-spaced cochannel station (105.5 WDBY) in Putnam County, NY. Per FCC interference standards, DHA can't increase towards the northeast direction at all.

It can increase a little bit towards the southeast (NYC).

Precisely. Which is why I cut a little slack for Walter, er, MedianJ to wiggle around with if he really means something else. But that's really neither here nor there. The overblown, over-the-top comparison to founding a country and proverbially tooting his own horn is the hallmark of a sad, little person no matter what they think they've done in their life.
