an awful song

I heard a song called the Redneck Yacht Club last night. It was awful! Im tired of these call outs and the glorification of mediocrity. It is very similar to black artist using the n word and exploiting a downtrodden, ghetto lifestyle. I have long maintained that some blacks do not respect themselves based on the proliferation of WB type sitcoms that portray them in a very bad light. Now we are seeing this in the Country world. People of all races need to respect themselves and sing songs that uplift and empower one another. Instead we hear, "hee, haw", "Im white trash". "Im going to raise some hell at tonight's big bash!" I just made that up. Im sure Toby Keith or whoever would love to use it.

The song debuted at #57 on the Hot Country Songs chart dated May 21, 2005. Having charted for 27 weeks on that chart, it peaked at #2 on the chart dated October 29, 2005. It also peaked at #45 on the Billboard Hot 100, #93 on the Billboard Pop 100, and #1 on the former-Radio & Records (now Mediabase 24/7) country charts.

The audience who enjoys and relates to "Redneck Yacht Club' does not have low self esteem. It appeals to the core country lifegroup. They aren't as materialistic or status seeking as most of America. They are more down to earth. They highly value hanging out with friends and family. Some enjoy dinking beer while they socialize with friends. IMO, these folks are much more enjoyable to be around than highly driven achievement oriented individuals.

Songs like this are part of the charm of country music. They are humble and non-pretentious. There have always been songs like this in the format. One of my all time favorites is Johnny Russell's "Rednecks, White Sox, and Blue Ribbon Beer" from the early 70s..same exact theme.

I always took that song as a tongue in cheek commentary on the so called "redneck" lifestyle. It's not "Your Cheatin' Heart" or "Nightlife" but is isn't horrible. I like some of the cute songs like "Ticks" and "High Maintenance Woman". One of my all time favorites, Moe and Joe's "Where's The Dress" and there's that one about It's hard to kiss The lips that chew you out. Some are cleverer than others but no reason to hate any of them, just tune out when they come on if you're not into them. I myself don't mind a little fun in my music, I had enough of the message laden social consciousness raising songs in the 60's and 70's during Vietnam and anything beats rap crap.

I agree with Jay F on this one

That's why the song is not as hot in some places as it is in places or where people can identify with what is being described in the song.

But Craig Morgan (who did Redneck Yacht Club) has made a living off of singing songs that are traditional country sounding that describes common southern life such as "That's what I love about Sunday" and his last song "International Harvester" (which describes a farmer telling people about his life as a farmer and what he thinks about the people encroaching that life)

The song. Regular Joes, rockin' the boat, that's us.

My country station actually plays this one!

And I agree with JayF. To the original poster: I should have had your name. Maybe I would have thought of that had I not accused my pop radio station of hiring a chimp for a music director back in '97.

Your reason for not caring for the song is of course your own but your reason and your outlook on things expresses a very big problem with our country and our country music today. A lot of people are loosing site of who they are where we come from right or wrong good or bad we as a people can not further who we are with out excepting first who we once were and where we have been. The cookie cutter so called country music that is comming out today really sucks plane and simple. When you mix country with pop and rock it sounds like crap most of the time. I was talking to a friend mine in Nashville last week on the phone about this problem and he tells me that the cost of a recording session to produce a cd is so high that they have no choice but to mix the styles of music to get a big enough market of listeners to cover the cost factors even if the sound that comes out sounds like crap it's all they can do to stay afloat right now and the song your complaining about doesn't sound half bad gee. Yes there is a lot of brainwashing going on to keep the music industury going right now telling people what they should listen to and what they should like in music no down home country feeling, stay away from a country rythem, use country lyrics on top of a crappy sound to try and get the song to relate to people, and you complain about a song that isn't have bad.

There's a long history behind the mixing of country and pop, and those who did it reside in the Country Music Hall of Fame. The Nashville Sound itself was the blending of country and pop to result in a sound that would appeal to the broadest group of people. And it did. Patsy Cline was an early pop/country hybrid.

Regarding the theory of the cost of recording sessions, it does seem to apply to Alan Jackson, George Strait, or even Brad Paisley. The fact is that music tastes are as individual as people themselves. Some people like a little pop with their country. Some people like sugar in their coffee. Not me. I like it black. But I'm not most people. One man's genius is another man's crap. If people are purposely putting out crap, it's no wonder the music business is in the shap it's in. But there's no shortage of authentic country music being created every day, and it usually costs about the same to create. But one thing I've learned is you can't force someone to like something they think is crap. So if certain kinds of records are being made now, it's probably because there's an audience for them. If there isn't, they'll stop making those kinds of records very soon.
