An "Eagle" done right!

I was researching somebody's Florida DX stations, and thought they might have nabbed 96.9 Jacksonville. When I brought up their web site, I saw an eagle! Looking at their last songs played, though, I noticed a much richer playlist than we get on Houston's eagle. It is so good, in fact, I'd be listening almost exclusively, and its now on my streaming list. So good, also, I just posted their last songs played link, because no matter when you bring it up, it probably has a much better playlist than our local "eagle":

So why can't 107.5 / 106.9 get it right? If all they did was match Jacksonville song for song - they would be infinitely better!

There's also an "Eagle" sister station in Tampa, but they masquerade as a "classic hits" station when they're 99.9% classic rock.

I don't see any major differences between theirs and ours.

It looks like they play more 60's classic rock, and a better variety of songs. When I hear "Hotel California" every time I turn on the radio - it is either a huge statistical anomaly, or they have way too small of a playlist. Either way - the playlist on Houston's eagle is basically awful, I have no idea who decided what songs to include. Jax Eagle playlist is MUCH better and more varied.

Not sure I will ever understand why any program director would want to run such a short playlist. Seems like every music station does it, be it country or rock. I guess it's just a lazy PD or MD. And Houston seems to be full of them.

Its really not up to the PD. Corporate plays a big role in what gets played. It seems the only time there is any lee way in the selection is when there's competition.

Corporate - not listeners. That explains why the Eagle sucks.

I used to work at a small market station where the GM/PD wouldn't let us play anything unless it was on the Billboard Top 40, even though we got call-in requests for music that wasn't. One day in a programming meeting, I made the crack that we were letting New York, LA and Deeetroit program our station. That comment nearly got me fired. But, in the ensuing discussion the rest of the staff just about walked out. Ultimately, there were some trade-offs, but everything in the library became playable as long as we didn't violate the format.

When corporate PDs are deciding what gets played in a given market, the same thing is happening. Out-of-towners are deciding what Houston is supposed to hear. What we're supposed to like. I don't like being told what I like and don't like.

You're right about that! Sometimes it depends...

It seems like most of Cox's Classic Hits are pretty much the same, they sounds like Classic Rock. So as their AC's, most of them sounds the same, they sound very upbeat with greater Hot AC/CHR contents while their other two AC's WFEZ/Miami and WDUV/Tampa are very soft.

It seems like Cox stations are very different from other stations that are owned by CC, CBS, Cumulus, etc. in the way their stations are being programmed. Their Classic Hits doesn't sound like other Classic Hits and their AC's doesn't sound like other AC's.

Personally, I really dislike Cox stations (in any format). Too bad the Houston market got Cox involved in their market. Too bad the Classic Hits hole of the market is dominated by Cox's KGLK which sounds really crappy. The good news is that the AC hole is dominated by CC's KODA which is a good AC. If KODA was owned by Cox then KODA wouldn't be playing many soft AC songs that most AC's are playing today and they wouldn't be playing any 70s music at all either. Unlike CC's AC's besides WLTW/NY and WLIT/Chicago, most of Cox's AC's doesn't play any 70s music at all. Most of Cox's AC's are positioned as the 80s, 90s, and Now. Previously, WSB-FM did play 70s music, but last year WSB-FM dropped all 70s music from their playlist.

I'm glad Houston got a good AC a.k.a. KODA owned by CC. Here's a list of Cox's AC's (and I don't like any of them, I doubt you guys would like any of them either):

WSB-FM in Atlanta - WSB-FM Playlist on yes.com
WEZN-FM in Bridgeport - WEZN-FM Playlist on yes.com
WWRM in Tampa - WWRM Playlist on yes.com
WFLC in Miami - WFLC Playlist on yes.com

Oh yes, I was going to mention about KRAV in Tulsa. KRAV is actually an AC leaning Hot AC, but it looks like just every other Cox's AC's that sounds very upbeat. Previously, Tulsa had a good AC a.k.a. Renda's KBEZ which flipped to Bob FM in June 2010 due to low numbers, probably because KRAV took away most of KBEZ listeners. From there, Tulsa doesn't have a true AC anymore which leads KRAV to be Tulsa's only AC although it's sounds very upbeat just like every other Cox's AC's with a very upbeat playlist.

Tulsa have a Classic Rock a.k.a. Cox's KJSR which was Classic Hits that later evolved into Classic Rock and it still sounds just like every other Cox's Classic Hits that sounds like Classic Rock. Previously, I heard Tulsa got a good Classic Hits a.k.a. CC's KQLL which flipped to Gen-X as KTGX in December 2009 due to low numbers, probably because KJSR took away most of KQLL listeners. From there, Tulsa doesn't have a true Classic Hits anymore which leads KJSR to be Tulsa's only Classic Hits although it sounds like Classic Rock just like every other Cox's Classic Hits with a Classic Rock playlist.

Unfortunately, Cox have dominated Tulsa's AC hole and Classic Hits hole with their crappy AC and Classic Hits.

Cox does relatively well with news talk KRMG In Tulsa only because they have an inept competitor in Journal. I'm not sure they're so lucky in Houston.

What makes this even more confusing is that Cox's KONO in San Antonio is billed as classic hits but has R&B, disco, folk rock and whatever else was big in the 70s besides classic rock. Why the hell can't they clone this format elsewhere? To boggle the mind even more, they also have a sister station in SA that is....classic rock. What they hell are they smoking?
