The long-time political commentator and staunch Castro opponent Armando Pérez-Roura passed away in Miami last night at age 92.
After fleeing Cuba in the 60's, he established himself as a newscaster and commentator at stations like WQBA, WRHC, WFAB, WOCN and WAQI-Radio Mamb?*. He had been with CMQ and Radio Reloj with CMQ owner Goar Mestre prior to fleeing to Miami when threatened with death in post-revolution Cuba.
He did his last show just days before suffering a stroke, and is still to be found on the website of his last Miami radio home, 670 AM WWFE.
This marks, in a way, the end of a 60-year era when stations driven by anti-Castro rhetoric could be #1 in Miami, starting with WFAB and then WQBA back in the 60's and 70 and then turning to others like WRHC through the 80's until the new WAQI became the dominant Cuban exile station.
