An exciting time in Lubbock Radio!

Any attempt at Modern Rock would have to sandwich themselves between KFMX and KMMX (who play a ton more modern rock than you may realize). I don't know of anybody who would want to be in the middle of those two monsters. In addition you have KISS FM playing the crossover modern rock and the biggest problem of all-the people who listen to that stuff are probably THE most likely to have Ipods, Iphones and/or some other music player and are not likely to turn on the radio no matter what. Modern Rock (the Edge) just took a huge dump in Dallas and if it isn't working there, it has no chance in little ole Lubbock.

I have talked to several KFMX listeners. Each and everyone of them have told me that they hate it when they play several classic rock songs in a row but not enough modern rock. Even though they are an active rock station, I think classic rock is way overplayed. If there is an active rock station that is worth listening to, it's 99.9 KBAT out of Midland. I think the Odessa-Midland numbers have proven it too. They are almost the top station in Midland. I've said this before and I'll say it again. Oh how I wish we could have a station up here that sounds like KBAT. It sounds 10x better than FMX and it brings me joy when tropo brings KBAT to Lubbock.

I don't know what station you were listening to, but KBAT plays just two currents per hour. KFMX plays 4-5.

Yes, and yet we see the same stale radio formats here in Lubbock that are ubiquitous in every other market- some doing ok, and others not.

Well...there's a reason they're the "same old radio formats"....because those are formats that work. Any venture out of the norm (Jack, Classic Country, Alt, Americana...) never get more than "x" share because they appeal to a very narrow demo over time. They are what they are and never grow (consequently never fall off much either...which is I guess a strategy in itself). Trying to reinvent the wheel is a bad idea when you can take the existing wheel and smooth it out so it runs better. Don't see Toyota coming out with a 7 wheel car...just making better 4 wheel ones than everyone else.

I think it was the great Lew Dee's arm sweat who said "There are no new ideas left in radio."

I totally understand rockchicktx's complaints about FMX. But I think she's giving KBAT (the only rock outlet period in Midland/Odessa) too much credit. If KONE didn't exist, it's quite possible that FMX's ratings would mirror that of KBAT.

KBAT is clearly a solid station...but they are pretty conservative (as Nick suggested). Personally, I could do without that crusty voice guy (judging from the last time I listened). The Cumulus rocker in Amarillo is solid, as well...with better imaging (in my opinion).

I've always wondered why FMX played so muchclassic rock? I like the fact that when I tune into Rock 101.1 I know what I'm getting.....CLASSIC ROCK (I actually rather enjoy the older rock more, but thats just me).

But sometimes I'm in the mood for active rock. So what does one do when that mood sets in. Eureka! Of course lets tune into FMX........but wait is that ZZ Top hmmmm. Not what i was expecting. I have to give it to the guy's at Clasiic Rock 101 some credit. At least they stay consitant and play what they advertise.

AC/DC "Shot Down In Flames"
Tesla "Love Song"
Sammy Hagar "Heavy Metal"
Led Zeppelin "Good Times, Bad Times"

These 4 songs played within a 40 minute time span that included two (somewhat) lengthy spot blocks. They are now playing Aerosmith's "The Other Side" at 11:05pm. So, there you have it. KBAT is more hit driven than FMX...but certainly not more "active."

I must confess it's been awhile since I have taken a good listen to KBAT. Perhaps things have changed since the last time I have listened to it??? I work and rarely have time to listen to the online feed unfortunately. I guess I stand thoroughly corrected.

Maybe they were more "active" back before Bob-FM (formerly 95X) and Jack-Fm (formerly 102.1 FZX) entered the market? Maybe KBAT went more mainstream when they became the only rock station (active, alternative, or classic) in the market.

Besides, I owe an apology for getting txrockchick and eggsovereasy confused. Sorry.
