an idea for a HD-2 sub channel

Hi

An idea for a HD-2 sub channel for some radio ops ;)

why not "OZ-FM" ? - a channel that could play Australian pop hits. Since Americans are familiar with bands like INXS, Men At Work & AC/DC, why not a sub channel to hear other Aussie bands like The Divinyls, Midnight Oil, Dynamic Hepnotics, The Models, Richard Clapton etc.

Certainly would give some unique content ;D

just an idea of course............just like you could have a HD-2 for French pop hits too!

Why not run local college or high school radio stations on the HD-2? Or actually serve the community with them? That might attract more listeners than what is on now.

Dan, in the St. Louis area, there is one station that does do that. WLCA is a 1400 watt college station run by Lewis & Clark Community College in Godfrey, IL. The station is HD, with a subchannel that is used by Civic Memorial High School in Bethalto, IL. The main channel runs a very good modern rock format (at least I think so), and runs with a live on-air staff at least 17 hours a day. The HD-2 has a CHR format.

At 140 watts (1/10 analog power), their HD coverage is limited. But I give the school credit for putting on a station worth listening to, and to offer a platform for a school in the community. And both stations stream (with better sounding 128k digital streams).

Dxer2000, I don't think a 24 hour HD sub of Australian artists would be used since it would reach such a ridiculously small audience. A two-hour weekly block show, perhaps. A better concept might be a global hits/rock format incorporating English speaking acts (UK, Ireland, Australia, NZ, Caribbean, etc.). Still, there may not be much of a market there, even on HD.

In our area, most of the HD subchannels are extremely underutilized. The notable exceptions are KWMU's HD-2 (X-ponential radio) and HD-3 (MPR's Classical 24), Emmis' KSHE-2 (a locally programmed freeform classic rock), and Bonneville's "Deep Tracks" classic rock format which airs on WARH HD-2. CBS' offers a locally programmed contemporary Christian format on KEZK's HD-2.

I don't like the IBOC/HD platform for all of the reasons that are hashed and rehashed (literally and figuratively) on this board. I believe digital broadcasting has a brigher future online. Unfortunately broadcasters have trouble programming their EXISTING terrestrial analog radio stations these days. Any digital side channels (regardless of platform) are generally treated as afterthoughts.

there-in lies the problem. People tend to poo-poo any new ideas for unique content & radio stations all end up sounding the same & people wonder why radio sucks.....

I suspect that everyone posting on this board has a slightly different opinion of what "good" music is, and we all know that stations which program to the lowest common denominator get the highest ratings. Still, there are always creative programmers who say they have the magic formula for the next killer format.

The great thing about the Internet is that it offers the opportunity for programmers to try out a format & see how well it is received, then maybe tweak it. You get instant feedback based on how many listeners are connected to your server. Who knows - maybe the music from down under would go over big in the US. I've heard Paul Kelly & the Messengers, The Waifs, Greencards, etc. & definitely enjoy them. If there's a lot more where that came from, maybe. But can you make a format out of that? Well, lease some time on a server & give it a try. If you can garner as many listeners as Radio Paradise then you have something.

There's people all over the place pitching ideas for HD-2 channels to the powers that be. Most of them aren't getting anywhere, but some of them are. Don't let that keep you from trying. That's the way these ideas work.

I honestly wouldn't care what type of format an HD 2 or HD 3 station has as long as its manned by humans and there is effort. A robotic and overly glorified IPod Shuffle does not make a radio station. : (
