An idea for HDTV digital subchannels

With analog broadcast TV channels broadcasting with more HD subchannels, why can't some digital channels broadcast feeds of CNN or the Fox news channel? If not now, will that be coming in a few years?

Something along those lines was attempted by ABC with the "ABC News Channel." It was poorly received, and had low viewership.

In fact, towards the end, one host ended her hour with "thank you both for watching." I want to know who the other person is. :)

I doubt you're going to see another such experiment for a while. The Accu Weather and "Weather Plus" channels, plus local origin channels, seem to be the trend for subchannels.

If the notion of HDTV-broadcast channels relaying specific cable networks are
what is desired, I would think that cable operators would not be too eager to allow that to happen. "Why pay us for cable television service if you can just watch a prominent cable news network on your HD tuner for free?"

I think you're going to see more of a digital subscribtion-based type of platform in place before you get CNN or FOX news on digital sets without a cable line providing it to you. They're already doing it somewhere in the south I think.. Texas maybe? Can't recall.

You are probably referring to ABC News Now (not to be confused with the overnight broadcast program) which was carried on a digital subchannel of many ABC O&O's and affiliates. It is still around, now emphasizing distribution on the Internet, Internet-enabled cell phones, and some cable/FOIS systems.

It always helps to PROMOTE such offerings...it puzzles me why broadcasters seem to keep so much of this stuff a secret.
